Depends on the size of the skein (ball). I use one ball of 100gms for each sock, I also knit both socks at the same time, on a circular needle

Your pattern will tell you how many yards of yarn you will need for a pair of socks. I can get a pair out of one ball of sock yarn. It is thin so your get more yards on a ball and it goes farther. Depending on what yarn you bought, with 6 balls you should have enough for at least 5 pairs of socks. Get going and keep on knitting will you have enough, you will have leftovers.

Well there were only two kinds where i went and theynwere the same yardage. I didnt know sock yarn had diff yardage.....oops

It takes approx. 50 grams per sock. The lady who uses 2 100 gram balls still has enough for another pair.

I also buy a contrasting color to knit the toe and heel. My husband and I have large feet and I do mine on a knitting machine using Patons sock yarn. It takes a skein for each sock plus the contrasting color.

You might use a 100 grams for one sock if it were up to the knee. As a rule of thumb, a 50 gram skein of fingering yarn will make a regular sock for an adult male or female, or a 100 grams per pair. I would think you would have enough for three pairs if you got six balls. Have fun! I just got the greatest new pattern book called "Knitted Socks, East and West" by Judy Sumner. I highly recommend it to all who love to knit socks.

Love the photo of your doggie. Mine looks just like it. Mine is half beagle and half chihuahua. An interesting combo let me tell you! *LOL* What breed is yours?

I use one 100g ball for my socks and have enough leftover yarn to make a pair of odd ones which is my next project after Christmas

A lot depends on how long you want your sock. I've seen people get a pair of adult ladie's ankle socks out of a 50 g ball, (about 180 yds) and I've seen other people needing three of these balls for a single pair of men's.

Personally, I get 5 to 6 inch legs for average ladies and 4 to 5 inch legs average mens for my socks, and I use either - a 50 g ball per sock, or a 100 gram ball for a pair.

I get nervous using a skein of hand dyed yarn that has 320 m on it, but do manage to get a pair of socks.

If I want longer legs, I'll buy extra yarn either contrasting for heels, toes, and cuffs - or an extra 50 g ball... Depends on colourway and if I can get matching dyelots etc.

I'm going to do my first pair of socks after Christmas. I've been keeping track of what everyone says on this forum regarding socks. And I will do it, but only if I can stay off the forum long enough. I spend so much time on here with you gals and guys. You're all wonderful--funny, supportive, and generous. Love you all.

I agree with stitchdesigner. 50 grams per sock so 100 gr is two socks. I have small feet but usually have some left over. You should have plenty for 3 pairs.
