I am new to crochet and have a crochet hook from a magazine. It is double ended- a different size at each end. But it doesn't say on it what sizes the ends are. How do I find out? Is there a gauge specially for crochet hooks as my knitting needle gauge doesn't work for crochet hooks- I tried a crochet hook that does have the size written on it in the same size hole for a knitting needle and it doesn't fit in. Or am I measuring incorrectly?

You can hold the crochet hook against a ruler with mm's shown on it and then look at a gauge that corresponds.
My knitting needle gauge has crochet hooks also listed. In England you have different numbers but the mm's don't change, they are universal in any language. Your patterns mention the mm of a needle or hook as well as the number of the country the pattern came from. Write down the mm and size that you determine for future reference.

There is a knit and crochet gauge. Go to the company that you got your hook from and tell them that you want the hooks but you neeed to know the size. This will be difficult if they send you the information as you won't know which end they are talking about.
I haven't tried this but use your computer and see if there is a possibility they have pictures that are the exact size of the needles. If you are able to find something like this could you let me know so I can give that information to others as I have a guage on hand that I can check my items out.

Hi Rebecca, I too have a hook I received along with a magazine it too doesn't have the size on it that I can find but it is printed on the packaging the hook arrived in. Hope this helps.

I just took out my gauge which is the same as the picture, the measurement is a "hair" difference. If you look at the top the difference is 2 m.Take the tip of the needle and see which hole it goes into and you have the size of your needle. So feel safe using it and before I sign out just to let you know there is nothing at all on the back of the gauge.

Just wanted to get back on here and compliment Cindy on getting a picture of the gauge so close the "real" one. Cudos
