You can knit in the round either with a set of dpn's (5) or with circular needles - you can't really do it with 2 straight needles.

For me dpn's work for very small circles, for everything else using circulars is so much easier.

You'll also need to reverse the alternate rounds/rows - purl will become knit, and knit purl. It's just easier, in my opinion, to work patterns that are written flat flat and to work patterns that are written in-the-round circularly. Much easier on the brain!

Depending on what you're making, a circular needle might be the answer.
