A social worker friend of mine went to a conference here in Iowa last week and told me about a program that will soon be implemented in many hospitals across the US (it is already happening in BC Canada) http://www.pitchengine.com/limelitepr/bc-childrens-hospital-knitin-to-raise-awareness-for-the-period-of-purple-crying-/102909/
It is a program to raise awareness for shaken baby syndrome that was piloted in NC hospitals. "The Period of Purple" is when a baby has that colic cry that won't stop no matter what you do. That "purple period" is when an infant is mostly likely to be shaken. Hospitals will be sending babies home in purple hats and parents will be urged to put the purple hat on the baby when the baby has a colic episode.
Anyway, I urge you to begin using your purple stash to knit a stash of newborn hats as there will likely be a large increase in the number of hospitals all over the US that will soon be requesting all the purple baby hats they can get.
Here is more info on "The Period of Purple" or you can read more about individual purple hat programs around the US by Googling "Period of Purple hats"
