Using the little hole in interchangeables is fine UNLESS you're also using stitch markers. You cannot thread a lifeline through the stitch markers, since the markers move up with your needles and the lifeline cannot.

I didn't say you can't used them together, I said you cannot use the little hole in the needle to knit your lifeline in if you are using stitch markers because you cannot run a lifeline THROUGH the stitch marker. I use interchangeable needles, stitch markers and lifelines all the time. I do a lot of lace knitting. IF YOU ARE USING STITCH MARKERS you need to run your lifeline through the stitches with a large needle instead, so that you can go around your stitch markers.cindye6556 said:previous post on this subject:
Hate to differ with you, but is possible to use markers, life lines and interchangeables all at same time. Yes, the L.L. will be run through markers, but that is a good thing if (heaven forbid) you should have to rip back, markers will be there to guide you. I don't know about you, but I have enough markers of varying sizes and types I could use one on every row that has a L.L. and still have them left over. Besides once you place your 3rd or 4th L.L. you'll be removing the first and have all those markers to reuse.
If you're looking for a cheap alternative for markers, I purchased a package of jump rings used for jewelry for about $3 at JoAnn's and it has 100 of them in package. I can even loose one and not fill guilty, and not only that much thinner than the usual rubber or plastic ones sold on knitting aisle for $4 for 10.
Of course with all things that have to do with knitting is a matter of personal preference. For me this is what I do, and works well.
I'm having trouble picturing this. When you put in a thread lifeline, then there are TWO "lines" through the stitches (the lifeline and the needle). So the thread lifeline stays and you knit from the needle.altogirl said:If you use interchangeables and have two cables of the same size, just knit the row as usual, unscrew or unlock your needles and leave the cable in the row as the lifeline. Put your needle tips on the second cable and knit away!
I slide my work onto the cables and using the needle and thread, eye foremost to minimize snagging, and pick up the entire row at once.Coral McRae said:I've started Gran's Shawl. Obviously I will have to put in life lines (this is *me* we are discussing here)!!
Does anyone have a tip or two of an easier way than using a wool needle and crochet thread and running it through the stitches a few at a time?
If you are using a 2nd cable as you L.L. you remove the tips and put end caps in place and knit your next row as you normally would. If (heaven forbid) you have to rip back to that spot remove the end cap, put a tip on the end you'd be knitting from, and leave one tip on the needle you'll be knitting to. Once you've finished "reknitting" you can then use the cable again as your L.L. in another row where you wish to use a lifeline.JAAZ said:I'm having trouble picturing this. If you take off the needle tips and leave in the cable, you only have ONE "line". When you put the tips on the second cable, how can you "knit away" - there is no tip to knit FROM.
I thought about leaving one tip on the "lifeline cable" and putting one on the second cable, but you would knit off the "lifeline cable" and the stitches would no longer be on it when you finish the row.
Can someone provide more direction about this?

True, but I keep two sets of markers going. One set will be captured by your first lifeline. When I add another lifeline I put in the second set of markers. When I remove the first lifeline it liberates the first set of markers so I can use it when I add the next lifeline. I admit it's a little fiddley but it works. I'm a firm believer in lifelines. They have saved me much grief and hard work in the past. Aloha... Bevnrc1940 said:A word of caution...
If you use thread/cotton yarn through the holes of interchangeable needles, you won't be able to use any markers. It will keep the markers with that row you've threaded the cotton through. Is this clear as mud?

this is the BEST idea I've seen yet! will definitely try this one!altogirl said:I saw a suggestion here on KP that I thought was awesome.
