Help me please. I'm trying to finish a slip on sweater with crew neck, for my 3 yr old gr.granson. Everythig came out fine until I tried to join the sleeves to the body. I haven't joined the side seams yet, per instructions. How in the world do you join when the stitches in the body are going one way and in the sleeve the other way top to bottom and the sleeves left to right.
Thank for any help. Mollie ......

Mollie - Lay the sweater flat, right side up, then lay a sleeve on top of it, right side down. Join the top of the sleeve to the side of the sweater just as you would in dress making. Then turn everything so the right sides are together and start either at the wrist of the sleeve or the bottom of the sweater and make one long seam (if you start at the waist, you'll go up the side and continue down the arm). I'm wishing I could draw a picture . . .

Now, all that said, I assume everything is already knitted? You don't pick stitches up along the side of the sweater to start the sleeve?

I am assuming you have a cap at the top of your sleeve or if it is raglan it comes more to a point. Either way, after blocking the sleeve getting it flat, find the center of the top of the sleeve by folding it to get at the middle, put in a marker and then attach the sleeve at that point working down one side of the cap until you come to the underarm. Do the same on the other side of the cap attaching it to the armhole. Now you should have a sleeve that is connected to the shoulder of the sweater and on down to the underarm. Just use a length of the same yarn and sew in and out of each piece.

Next, start either at the cuff of the sleeve or the bottom of the back and front of the body of the sweater. Sew this seam up continuing right on under the arm and down the sleeve. This will be one long continuous seam from wrist to waist. Do the same for the other side.

There are tutorials on Berrocco's web site that give you clear instructions on how to sew seams.

I always start by pinning the center of the sleeve "cap" to the shoulder seam, and sewing sleeve cap completely in (to underarm). Then sew up the side from bottom hem to sleeve hem--all in one piece.

Thank you all. I have tried the instruction from cap center to underarm. But get like a double row of bound edges showing? Shouldn"t the armhole seam look the same as the shoulder and side seams?

As I suggested before. Go to Berrocco.com, to the tutorials and learn how to sew seams. Those around the sleeve cap, when matched up to the armhole opening are different in that they have increases and decreases and bind offs. I usually sew with the right side of the work facing me so I can see what is being caught in the sewing.
