Ready or not, I want to try knitting a pair of socks for my son. Does anyone have a favorite pattern for men?

I prefer to continue the ribbing down to the heel. Then the sock looks like my husband's dress socks and the leg/calf doesn't droop.

Oh, and I have another question about men's socks for my son. I want to surprise him and he lives out of town. How would I know how long to make it? He wears a size 11 shoe!
