I am adding a ribbed button band to a toddler sweater. The ribbing is K2/P2. On the 4th row, the directions say to add the button holes, K2 tog, yo, rib 8; repeat. If I knit 2 tog, then yo, then rib 8, the next 2 stitches are Pearl, but it says to repeat the K2 tog, YO. I can't seem to figure out how to K2 tog when the stitches I'm working with are Pearl stitches ... and if I Pearl 2 tog, what direstion do I YO to get it to work right? I am totally confused. Is there a video that shows how to do butonholes in ribbing?

there are two ways to do this
1. knit the 2tog yo rib
=k2, k2tog,yo,k2,p2
2. change to p2tog
=k2, p2tog,yo,k2
you should be able to do either of these and have no problem

it will look the same

You'll find the above steps will help with the (assuming right-handed) right to left on sequential rows. Essentially a Faggoting stitch pattern in a 'column' of the sweater.

I am assuming that your pattern is suggesting that you work the button hole over the 2 knit stitches of the ribbing. When I work a yarn over in ribbing I wrap the yarn completely around the needle after doing the k2tog. To do this I start with the k2tog. Then I bring my yarn to the front of my work, over the needle and back to the front of my work to work the p2.

But wait, when they tell you to k2tog or p2tog, aren't they trying to gradually make the knitting smaller? If you add a yo, you will defeat that intention.

Why not just do the k2tog or p2tog as suggested, and then if the next stitch should be purl, then purl it, if it should be a knit, then just knit it? You will see in the finished product where a stitch was decreased if you look closely, but it won't be noticeable as long as you return to your regular sequence of k1, p1 ( or p1,k1) immediately after the decrease stitch.

She indicated that she is working the button hole, so she needs to do the yarn over to create the hole.

Oops, sorry. I didn't read far enough or carefully enough. So...."never mind." : )

Carol-Make the button hole on the wrong side. If you are working a 2x2 rib and are supposed to make a buttonhole on the 4th row, that would be a wrong side row which you would work P2, K2, etc. Work your P2 for the first 2 stitches, then make your K2tog, yo, then on. By doing this on a wrong side row, your knit stitches are in the right place and your next (right side row) will be waiting for you to purl over the buttonhole stitches to form the hole. Denise

Okay...correcting myself from my earlier comment above. <G>

You'll want to do what Denisejh has below for one row. Make sure you know how many rows to the inch for your spacing and knit and purl plain until the next buttonhole space for the purl side needs to be placed. Continue to add the spaces and button holes until you either get to the top or bottom of the sweater. Be sure you have the correct side for male or female before you start. One needs the left side, etc. I have too many tabs or I'd attempt to look right now. <<G>>
