Care to join me knitting hats for the Homeless?

I’m enjoying knitting again while using up some of my odds and ends. Hope a few of you will join me in this worthwhile project.

I will post pictures of some completed hats soon. I have several easy patterns to share using Worsted Weight and Bulky yarns.

Bless you, hats are greatly appreciated by the homeless, who rarely get a new item of clothing.

I have been stash busting that way for years. I have knit hundreds of hats for the homeless in the Reno area. My 99 year old Grandmother has knit 1000s of hats for school children and homeless in the northern Wis area. It is a wonderful way to do something you love and passing that love thru giving. Good for you!

:?: I was wondering where you take the finished hats for distribution to the homeless and do you ever do mittens, too? I guess I am really asking because of what I run into when I go to our larger cities. I see homeless people, mostly men, standing out by the streets, especially near malls, with signs soliciting money for things like food and such. I cannot afford to give them any as I am retired on a fixed income and, besides, I really got the feeling that food and clothes may not be what they would use it for.

That is always a danger, however a warm hat is welcomed by most. I belong to a club who collects them, but you could contact your local churches, I know they would love to give them to those in need.

I've been doing this for years now. It is really a good way to work down your stash and know you are doing some good at the same time. I just make sure I am using the same weight yarn in the same hat.

in every community there is great need for knitted items...i belong to a group who's sole purpose is to knit, ect. for the needy in our community...we donate to the Salvation Army, Interfaith, a nursing home, a home for single mom's to be, a
spousal abuse center. so just check around... to paraphrase Jesus, "the need is great and the workers are few..."

I'd love to help!!! Where can I send them?
Check with your local Salvation Army. Our local organization has over 250 children each year that they give Christmas gifts too and they also give them a pair of mittens and a hat. My church knitting group uses their stash to help with hats and mittens and it helps cut down the cost of items the Salvation Army must purchase.

I've been knitting caps and mittens for probably close to 10 years now to donate to shelters. My best year was 212 items, so there is definitely a need for this. Hey, Jean Wilkins in West Michigan: just find a local shelter and call them up. That's what I did. I make all items from machine washable acrylic yarn. Also have donated to local Catholic Social Services office, since many of their clients are in need. Just start looking and you'll find all sorts of places. Everybody else out there who's doing this--keep up the good work!

I’m totally amazed at all the wonderful folk on this website who are knitting for the needy.
