That is also called a provisional cast on. There are videos on youtube that can help.

Instead of waste yarn you can use a circular needle or just a short cable from an interchangeable set and screw end caps on it.

I use this quite a bit, more sturdy than waste yarn..and there's no real risk of dropped stitches. Once you attach a tip you are good to go!

The knitpicks cords for their interchangeable needles..and their circular needles are very light weight and flexible. I just grabbed this old Boye one because it's short.

The item I posted the picture of, is a collar that is knit out from the center, so it's not going to be on there all that long. I've also used a dpn, a pipe cleaner, what ever is handy. Say do you really need that second chopstick?
