I found this free pattern for socks, and there are quite a few of these, but this one clued me in to a great way to make sure the top is knitted without space.

To make an extra stitch at cast-on and slip the last one from the 3rd needle onto the 1st needle and knit them together, leaving the right amount of stitches: Example:
cast on 63, after knitting the two together, you have the right amount of 62. It works great, and can be done with any yarn used for socks.

that is a great idea, that i will use for sure. love my socks. better than bought any day, i must say. love these good ideas that people come up with...wonderful. thanx.

thanks for the pattern. I think I will try making socks for my DSs that wear flight boots as they both flight nurses now.
