Hello to all you lace crazed ladies (me included). When it comes to shawls, what type is your favorite to Knit and your color preferences?

Are you a design repeater-short or long repeats, no repeats in your designs or patterning on every row? Do you like circle, semicircle, triangle or rectangle? Do you like to use plain colors or tonal or do you like veriagated or the newer gradients?

There are so many options I would kind of like to see where our lacy ladies come in. One last thing, because this can give us some new things to check out, who are your favorite designers?

My favorite designers are Dee O'Keefe and if you like to do beading Boo Knits. These patterns are easy to understand, well written and have both written and charts.

"all of the above" lol.... I like to make all the shapes, and all the patterning. I even like the patterns on every row. Colour - only thing I like to avoid is white. I like colour!!! As for what colour - well, it pretty much has to match my wardrobe. So, I tend toward the pink/red palette. Though, I see some greens I like, or blues, but I really don't have much that I can wear those colours with. So, I avoid them. I do have some greys, and black.

Favourite designers - well, I like several.... Romi, (Rosemary Hill), Liz (Elizabeth) Lovick, Melanie Gibbons, Mmario, Evelyn A. Clark, Fiber Trends, I know there are others, but it is early morning for me, and my brain isn't fully awake yet....

You can usually substitute another type of increase down the back.

I have recently made a crescent shawl and decided I prefer rectangles and triangles.
I like triangles that have a lace edge with little or no lace in the main.
I don't mind pattern stitch or row length, different challenges for different occasions
I have only done pattern one way, purl back
My preference is for plain colours, greens, blues...
I have made designs by Dee O'Keefe, Elizabeth Lovick, Nancy Bush and Anniken Allis among others

I'm kind of partial to lacy triangles with asymmetrical shapes. I'm working on an idea with a brioche edge. I love Elizabeth Lovich's samplers too.

I've made many triangles. Looking at crescent and asymmetric shapes these days. Much prefer tonal yarns - little bit if color interest and lace patterns still look good. Don't like laceweight much, prefer fingering.

Speaking of tonal, I accidentally picked exactly the right yarn for a lace shawlette. It seemed like the dye pattern exactly matched the lace pattern. Believe me, I stumbled on it. I wish I knew the magic formula for achieving this effect deliberately.

Thanks for the response, I looked up Melanie Gibbons, I like her mystery shawls. My latest "oh my" designer is Anna Victoria of By the Lilly Pond. Do you like Orenburg designs? I'm a member of a prayer shawl ministry so I am blessed to be able knit all different kinds of shawls, all the time. Again, thank you for you comments.

I like all of them I think! There are several I will do the M1 increase instead of a yo to not have the hole. I have used so many different colors I am not sure that is important either! I just find out what the favorite color is of the person the shawl if for and go from there. I have done half circle, wings, rectangles, triangles, etc. They are all good! I know no help, but you did ask! :sm09:

Actually you are all helpful. I did, among other things, want to see what shapes were preferable, and if a lot of people liked to work shawls with every row patterning. I have pretty much found that and even picked up a couple of designers, which was important. There are so many designers out there and it would take forever to find them all. I have found several I have in common and a couple of new ones. On occasion I skim through Ravelry lace shawl patterns, but with 209 pages of shawls I still haven't made it all the way through, not to mention the new designs/designers that keep popping up.

So far, Melanie Gibbons, her mystery shawls are cool. Because I have a fairly large library of knitting books I've seen a lot of designers, but new ones still pop up. My latest is Anna Victoria. I am surprised so few like semicircle shawls, possibly because of the large number of stitches when the shawl is done. I'm just now getting into circular shawls. I'll be glad when I can get used to working in the round.

Great topic. I have lots of lace shawl patterns that I got from right here. I just learned here today, that to get rid of the spine yo,do a mi increase.
Thanks for the info. ( I will say that I have a few of Dee O'Keefe's patterns in my ravelry library.) I'm knitting a simple lace triangle shape shawl now.

Crescents and rectangles. I'm a big fan of Kiernen Foley of knit/lab and have knit 3 of his shawls. My most recent shawl is my second favorite: 'knitangles' by Andrea Halasi. I also avoid the YO spine.

I'm kind of surprised to not see Renee Leverington aka Goddess Knits show up. Probably less well known Birgit Freyer (watch the spelling on first name). Both these ladies have spectacular, easy to read patterns and like to use decent sized needles. Such as size 7s instead of 3s.

Of course!! Those are two more that I'd forgotten about when I posted yesterday morning - And Anna Dalvi - I adore her patterns.

I've already answered about favourite shapes -- but I'd like to mention a pet peeve of mine when it comes to shawls: It seems that some people are designing "shawls" that are really no more than a fashion scarf! To me, a shawl should be something that at least covers your back, shoulders, top of the arm, and back of the neck -- something to wear over a sleeveless or spaghetti strap top or dress. There is nothing more frustrating than thinking you are creating a shawl (because the picture doesn't show it on a person, and not everyone can easily visualize size when just given numbers) and it turns out to be too short to wrap around your shoulders, and not wide enough to keep your back or arms from being chilled!!

I found this topic so interesting. I am going to do a lace shawl next for the first time. I have looked for hours at wool and patterns and now I will look at all the designers you have mentioned.
