I used to make large pom poms as balls for a baby to play with. Cut out two circles in card - the size you want your pom pom to be - cut a hole in the middle about an inch wide. Put the two pieces of card together and gradually wind the wool through the centre hole and round the outside. Make it nice and thick. Then carefully cut through the wool on outside edge of the circle. Tightly tie a piece of strong thread -or double thickness wool in between the two pieces of card. Remove the card - and you have your large pom pom. Hope it works for you. Good luck.

Someone else on here suggested winding the yarn around the tines of a fork, to produce an "easy" way of making a pompom - I guess you could use a large (maybe a barbeque fork), if you want a large pompom.

I use 2 plastic lids the same size about 4 inch diameter ( I've used lids from bread crumb cardboard canisters). I use a piece of metal pipe about 1 inch in diameter, and heat it over my gas stove burner, so I can melt a hole in the lids centers (the plastic will tear easily if just cut out) . Put both lids together with flat ( top of lids) part of lids together. Wrap with ? Maybe 20 or so yards of yarn from center hole out.Cover entire plastic, cut the yarn around the perimeter between both lids. Use a strand or two of yarn and pull TIGHTLY to hold all strands around the center 1inch hole. Remove both lids carefully, and they will last for quite a few Pom poms.Fluff and trim to make round . I hope I've explained clearly!
