This is the most basic of hats. Versatile and fun. I have no real pattern. I cast on however many stitches I want. This one is 88 I think. Then I knit2purl2 for about 9 inches and begin the decreases. I use circular needles til I need to switch to double points. That's about it.

I make lots of these, too. In 2x2 ribbing, they're very stretchy, so fit lots of different heads. Also a good way to use up scraps, as you may have done to make the blue stripes. If I have enough yarn, I always try to make them long enough that the bottom can be turned up to provide a double layer over the ears. If anyone's happier with a pattern for a guide, this is a good one

You're like my gramma - she'd just get her yarn and needles and make something - seldom saw her fiddling with a pattern.

I use the same pattern, 88 sts on a size 8 or 9 needle. If I want a larger diameter I add a multiple of two stitches. When the cuff has been knitted I use st st and add stripes.
