Maybe I love this yarn, but I HATE this pattern! (knit)

This pattern is for a knitted "striped afghan". Its a pretty solid color with lengthwise stripes knitted in. I got the yarn at an auction so it might be old, but I couldn't find a Hobby Lobby pattern correction area online. Could you help, please?

CO 100
16 rows garter stitch
Row 17: 9p, 4k, * k2tog & yo, 3k, yo, k2tog * rep from 8 *to * 7 times; 4k, 9p

Is there a number missing? It says "repeat from 8", what 8?! Should it say k8 inside the * *? How many stitches would that be if you include a k8? No matter what I try, I cannot get 100 stitches!!! And that's only the 1st row! I'll limit this question to Row 17 for simplicity. Thank you for considering this. Following good knitting patterns thrills me!

I'm a very visual person, would need to see what the end result is supposed to look like, Is there a border around it? If there is, then wouldn't the beg and ending stiches have the same number of stitches?
I think the 8 is an error and the instructions are telling you to repeat from the * to * and then end the row in a k4, P9. If you look at your keyboard, the * is on top of the 8 key. Otherwise, my math says to do a cast on of 103 stitches. The border stitches of P9, K4 add up to 26. Subtract that from 103 cast on's and you are left with 77 stitches. Then you would work the pattern from * to * eleven times.
Looks like none of the rows equal what the cast on calls for. There's plenty of great, free patterns out there. I'd pick a different one.

I have learned to check through a pattern and count the stitches before I start the pattern and make sure it's right. If something looks fishy I can always check this site!
This is what the pattern should be.

Row 17: K9, p8, *k2tog, yo, k2tog, k4 * repeat from * to * 6 times, p8, k9.
Row 18: K14, *p8, k4* repeat from * to * 6 times, k14.
Row 19: K9, p8, *k2tog, yo, k2tog, k4 * repeat from * to * 6 times, p8, k9.

Yes, there is a problem with this pattern....you can make the adjustment with a CO of either 96 sts and repeat from * to * (just disregard the "typo" 8) 10x or you can CO 103 sts and repeat the pattern 11x

Good luck and have fun!
This would show a decrease of 6 stitches in 17 & 19 and the rows do not equal 100, right? Also, shouldn't the sides outside the *repeats* be equal in number of stitches? I'm still new at this but it seems that it should to me.

So how do you like the yarn you bought? What color is it?
Someone made an error in typing the directions. It should read from * to *. You will knit what is included between the asterisks seven more times across the row.

I had to laugh, my very first experience was with directions was with very fine yarn and a language I didn't understand. When I read your subject title, I thought "no, I'm the opposite, I love the pattern, hate the yarn" I still haven't made the scarf yet with the yarn, but I'll not let it beat me. Good luck to you.
Good luck with it you've gotten some great advice to help you out. Can't wait to see your finshed masterpiece!
I'm thinking that since the * is on the 8 key maybe the 8 was typed in by mistake.

Is there a number missing? It says "repeat from 8", what 8?!

It's probably row 8 thru 17 - 7 times

Theresa, you are right. There's no way you can get 100 sts. by following that pattern. I suggest you do it this way:

10P, 5K, *K2tog, yo, 3K, yo, k2tog* repeat 10 times then 10P, 5K (from * to * you have 7 sts. x 10 = 70 add the 15 at the beginning of the row and 15 at the end gives you another 30 or a total of 100 sts.) Hope that helps.
This site is THE BEST for solving problems...and QUICKLY!!
What a spot to visit daily!!
the * ,*means repeat the pattern 8 times, I don't know why they have a 7 in there, the way I figured it there are 9 stitches in the repeat area, so 9x8= 72, add the two out side stitches that is 26, so the total is 98, you are still 2 stitches short, If it were me I would add one more stitch on either end. I am going to try the pattern to see what I get, will chec back with you later.
Great catch, Deemail!!! I wouldn't have thought of that conflation of the 8 and the *!!
This forum is great... I learn something every day.

Here is what I think may have happened...
Since the asterisk is a Shift 8, I am thinking the 8 should be omitted. I think the pattern then makes sense.
You people are amazing with all those numbers. It's the kind of pattern that can make you pull you hair out. I think we should write to pattern maker and let them know the problems with the direction. maybe there could be some free yarn in the future for MRSREVCRSS
