I don't wanna offend anybody. I am from Switzerland and I think your Memorial Day is a beautiful thing. But siting here and watching Tv I am starting to ask myself " is this really what it's supposed to be? Just another day with stupid sales here and sales there? " is it not supposed to be a day to reflect and be thankful ?

There's no limit to the ends some people will go for a little more money. Every holiday is messed up this way and even some fake holidays invented by the advertisers.

Thank you for asking, and I don't think you're offending anyone. It's supposed to be a day to remember and honor those heroes that lost their lives while in the service. But of course it's turned into a free-for-all with sales, etc. I find that very sad, and very unpatriotic. I, for one, will NOT be partaking in any of the sales. I'll go to my town square, watch the parade, and stay for the Memorial Day ceremony. Being a military mom and mom-in-law, Memorial Day means much more to me.

We have many events going on where we live. There are parades where we have veterans march with music, ceremonies to honor those who did not make it home. My husband plays bagpipes and plays them at monuments while flowers are laid to honor those who fought for our freedom.
Some people try to make a dollar off of it, but there are those who do honor the meaning of the day.

I hate the way Memorial Day is celebrated now. It's was changed so that it would create a 3 day weekend and, yes, it all has to do with money. I do not celebrate on the national date, I celebrate the traditional date.

IMO -- Too many commercial advertising and not enough tribute functions and ceremonies are being put into the media stream.
I think the American traditions, remembrances and honors are still very much alive.
Just need to turn away from the boob tube and take notice of the world around you. There is more to the world than what is shown by the media.
No offense meant .. just a generalized statement.
Thank You and Bless You To All Our Military Members.

Of course it has to do with the money factor, why else would they create a 3 day weekend. My family still celebrates the traditional date. I also resent the fact that they made a seperate holiday for Martin Luther King and then lumped all the Presidents into one day.

I don't begrudge the retailers for their sales....there's a lot of competition to get our attention. Face it, we rarely buy anything anymore that isn't on sale...and there's ALWAYS a sale. The Easter sale turned into a Mothers Day sale, which is now a Memorial Day sale, and will soon be a Fathers Day sale, etc. I am almost immune to sales now; they don't mean much. I would have a big problem, though, if they tried to turn Memorial Day into a gift-giving occasion.

Most of the people I know have plans for Memorial Day which include going to parades, getting together with family and friends, working in their gardens, etc. This type of stuff you won't see on TV commercials.

Memorial day has quite an interesting history, dating back to the Civil war:

Unfortunately, it has turned into the first day of summer fun (swimming, boating, etc.) for some and all kinds of sales for businesses, and people don't realize its significance anymore.
