After a hundred-year hiatus (actually it's about half that) I am trying crochet again. My first attempt is a hat from Lion Brand's collection. Starting to get the feeling and am anxious to finish the first and go on to something prettier, like your wonderful hat, Hepsubah. Is this your own creation or is a pattern available?
I use Red Heart 4-ply yarn for the hats, and a No. H crochet hook is used throughout the piece. The top of the hat is the standard pattern for the 1920s Flapper hats. For the brim, I did increases where ever I wanted. The edge of the brim is crocheted over lamp wire from the hardware store that I pulled apart to use one section instead of the two it comes in.
Thank you for showing this lovely hat. And, also all the added information for us to make one of our very own! Nice job and love the band and embellishment. Great job.
I discovered that two strands of trimmer line, round, size .065", also works well for the last crocheted round of the brim. I have had good luck with the lamp wire when I separate the two pieces, and the trimmer line. Both are stiff enough to hold the shape of the brim.
Now, I have to find a better way of connecting the ends of both, besides taping them. Any ideas? Some kind of clamps, like in jewelry making, maybe? Or???
I just added wire to a crocheted hat this morning. I couldn't find any info online about joining wire that didn't involve me buying the joiners for hat making. I used a really tight blanket stitch to join the wire with a #10 crochet cotton that I had doubled in the needle. The blanket stitch was pulled tight enough that the wire didn't move when I tried tugging it apart. The join looked a little bulky when I was working on it, but the wire and join became less noticeable when I single crocheted it to the hat brim. It was even more difficult to find when I added additional rows to the brim.
