They turned out too big, even though I did gague swatches. I wear them anyway! I made the mistake of making the pink and yellow ones out of acrylic yarn so they didn't block too well. Also, I found out that wool blend feels a whole lot better on your feet than acrylic feels!

I was so intimidated by sock knitting until I tried it a few times. Once I figured out short rows, the rest was a piece of cake. Love it!

No, I did them one at a time. I know what you mean- after I finish with one sock, I want to start on a new pair! But I go ahead and finish up the other sock so I can wear them!

Did you do toe up? They are very nice. I just got my circular needles and about ready to start my 1st pair of socks. I want to do 2 at a time so I don't end up with only one sock...heehee! What is the short rows you mentioned?

Hey those are really nice. The first socks I made were for my boyfriend in highschool, many years ago. It was an intricate pattern and when he went to put them on, they did not stretch enough to get them on. The pattern would not let the yarn give. That was the last pair of socks I ever did. My mother was able to knit anything and very fast, so I was intimidated. She would laugh at how I put the yarn over while she just whipped it over in a flash. I am better now though...LOL.

No, I did them cuff down. Short rows is when you're shaping the heel. You work on just the middle stitches but leave the edge stitches on the needles- it makes the cup for the heel. I was SOOOOO confused but once I got it, it was SOOOO simple!

I used a pattern from Ann Budd's "Getting Started Knitting Socks" book. She makes it all so simple, with great photos of each step. Let me know if I can help. Pam

OMG, I still knit like that! I try to watch the "Knitting Today" shows and they knit so fast it boggles my mind! Someday I hope to figure out how people go so fast! I think it's because I taught myself from a book so I only know the mechanics of it.

Socks are so much fun and they move so fast. This summer I set a goal of knitting enough socks to take me through the winter..I filled a basket with hand knit socks. They are so much nicer than store bought.

One of my coworkers asked me how much it cost to knit a pair of socks...since I tend to use yarns that cost a bit I told her that it averages from $12.00 - $20.00 a pair..she thought that was outrageous, until I pointed out that the knitting of the socks was "entertainment" that ended with a usable product ...price of a movie, large popcorn and a soda..but I have socks when I'm done!!!

How do you keep fron having knots when changing colors?

Those are sweet looking, Pam. Really great! How many did you start and rip out before you achieved these? I started my first pair a few weeks ago on the magic loop needles (addi clicks) . However, i used a heavier worsted weight yarn, so that i could see things more clearly. I have made it to the gusset so far. Although I am thrilled with my progress, I think now that I have a much clearer understanding of it, I would like to start again with yarn more appropriate for project. (sock weight ?) Great job, thanks for showing us, it gives me a real sense of I can do this!

You just change colors like in anything else and weave in the ends. Mine only have the color change at the heels and toes. Gotta love that self striping yarn!

Thank you so much for the encouragement. Actually, I started the blue ones first and had SO much trouble doing the part where you pick up stitches after the heel- I think it's the gusset? Anyway, I couldn't figure out what to pick up- kept having too many or too few stitches. I must have ripped it out 10 times! So I did the same thing you did. I made a pair out of chunky yarn in a solid color. It made it so much clearer.

So, I finished that pair and wear them for slippers because they're too bulky for socks. it really helped to be able to "see" what I was doing! I do my heels in a solid color now because it's easier for me to see which stitches to pick up.
