I am wondering if someone could help me figure if I have enough yarn to make my son a sweater. I have 3,740 yards (Cascade 220) his chest size is 48" (thinking I would like to make it a little larger - he's 6'3" and lifts weights) - I am getting 4 stitches to the inch - which means I would have to cast on 200 stitches (I hope I have the math correct) - then work the percentage system from that key number. My problem is (besides math) I am worried I may not have enough yarn. He wants the sweater in the Green Bay Packer colors - I have purchased the Forest Green and Goldenrod (yellow) - and I have a total of 17 skeins.
I hope this post makes sense to someone besides me (and I'm not sure it's making that much sense to me) Thank you for any help you have to offer.

I am looking at a book of sweaters made with Patons Canadiana, another worsted weight yarn. There is a size 52-54 inch chest (finished chest is 59 inches) that calls for 1792 metres/1960 yards. That is for either a crew neck of a turtle neck pullover. I am thinking you should have plenty of yarn with some left over. See you made sense and I only had to read it once.

Linday, thank you so much!! I will start the sweater tonight. Now I hope I get the math correct. I've done a few of them, and they are easy, once the math is done. So, keep your fingers crossed that I have my math right, or I shall have to find someone else for the sweater when it's finished ... would not be a first for me :)

Thank you, I have this worksheet but I am glad you sent it as I had forgotten that I have it someplace. I use the Jacqueline Fee "The Sweater Workshop" I made (crew neck) sweater for a girlfriend of mine, but she is tiny and it was quick, but I always forget how to do the math. Once it comes back to me than it's a breeze. It does not help that I am hopeless with numbers (thank goodness I married an accountant) - I do appreciate the help. I did not think anyone would reply so soon. :)

Just keep the fit for the sweater in mind.
If he will wear it looser, like a sports style, you'll need to add ease to his measurements. Usually 3" or maybe more, depending on how loosely he wants it to fit..
Try googling "knitting ease" for a little more about it.

Thanks for all the information. I think he does like his sweaters bigger, I shall add 3" to the 48" - after all he is moving back to Wisconsin . He is going to need to wear something under it.
I love KP - :) :)
