Wow! They sure did destroy a beautiful heirloom. You sure recreated a beautiful masterpiece and an heirloom to be cherished! It is gorgeous! I am sure she is tickled pink! ;0)

How wonderful that you were able to recreate it. You did a fantastic job, but it is sad that the other was destroyed.

Wouldn't the dry cleaner have known how fragile that piece was?

Your recreation is stunning. So sad about the original, but as dreamweaver stated, it may have been so deteriorated that the least amount of cleaning could have caused it to fall apart.

The picture of the destroyed shawl made me sick to my stomach. I didn't expect that reaction. You have made a beautiful replacement that hopefully will last a lifetime. We learn some hard lessons sometimes in life and I think taking knitting to the dry cleaners is a good example.

Twenty years ago we had acrylics..chemicals from a dry cleaners will eat holes in acrylic yarns...looks like that to me...
I was wearing a mixed fabric flannel gown (years ago)dropped nail polish remover on it and it instantly ate a hole in the fabric..

Same concept..

Beautiful shawl and workmanship. How fortunate that the pattern was still available. A true shame about the original. I am sure this will be treasured.

you would think that a cleaning business would have known that it was too old to clean-with the chemicals they use I would have told her to put it in a sink with ivory soap and just pat it- the chance that it would come out in better shape would have been better-I don't like to blame anyone when things like this happen but she put her faith in someone who has experience in knowing problems like this-I just wanted to cry when I saw it-you did a great job in replacing it-

I, too, was sick to my stomach when I saw the mess they made of the original. But, as others have said, who would think to dry clean something like that. I have a piece of lace with a scene in it that I framed. It's very old and when I found it, it was very dirty and stained. My mother washed it by hand and put it on a towel in the sun to dry. The sun actually bleached out the yellow color from the fabric. Looks fabulous. I've done that with other items since then with the same good results.
