I am going to tackle making Irish Baking Soda Bread. What I want to know is is it only for a breakfast meal/brunch type or can it be used with any meal? Also would be be tacky to make up and give as a gift with some small jars of jams and jelly say at Christmas time? Or would it be a good idea to just put the ingredients into a jar and give with directions as a gift?

Me too!! I think that would be a very nice gift.

I love Irish Soda Bread, but haven't made it for years. We used to toast & butter it for a snack. We never had it for dinner, but I've been to restaurants where they serve different types of breads in the breadbasket, and some of them are sweet or have raisins in them.

Either would be a wonderful gift...For me it would depend on the ability of the reciever to be able to make up the bread as to which way I would do it for a gift(example: for my mom I would give her the bread already made but for my sister who still bakes I would just put ingredients in the jar and I would give both a jar of jelly to go along with thhe bread)...

I always make soda bread when we have corned beef and cabbage. I tried to get away with not doing it once, and was roundly denounced by the family! LOL! It's sooo good toasted with butter the next morning. Cathy, I think it's a great idea for a gift.

You would have to be quick in giving as it is best eaten on day as made with butter milk. I have never been able to store in any way. Reminds me when small my mother took us back to Belfast every year on holiday to see Grandparents and reliteves. The bakery van came round every morning about 7am. fresh soda bread potato bread all by 8am covered in Irish farm butter and devowered

I found Irish Soda Bread cookies might even give that a try. I wouldn't send the bread out of state just for locals I know I am up here in the mountains and mostly older folk around these parts. So might be good to just make the bread. I may try two loafs one to be eaten like now and freeze up one see what happens.

My daughter made up jars last year for Christmas presents with ingredients for choc chip cookies. They went dowm very well so the soda bread would be a good idea as well.

We tend to eat it, fried, when having a special breakfast, with bacon, tomatoes, and eggs. Some people eat it for lunch too, but not for dinner. Anyway, anything homebaked will be delicious, I'd eat it anytime.

We eat our homemade Irish soda bread any way, any time we can get it--Warm, room temp, cold from the fridge. For breakfast with butter and jam; for afternoon snacks, toasted, or even with friends for evening tea or coffee with jam and cheeses.

Cathy, Watch as it can be a bit on the dry side. Hence the butter and jams. Not as bad as cornbread, but .. Where are you in the mountains of East TN. I am in the mountains of Southwest VA. I feel fairly certain we are close. quote=cathy47]I found Irish Soda Bread cookies might even give that a try.
