The "8" is the lower case of the asterisk key on the keyboard, so it's probably a typo.

Any instructions that begin with an asterisk(*) will end with an asterisk also. The second asterisk will usually be followed by the number of times you should do the stitching between the asterisks IN ADDITION to the first time.
e.g.:
K1, *YO, p2, k4, p2 YO, k2* 6 times. Knit to last st, P last st.
So you will yarn over, purl two stitches, knit four stitches, yarn over, knit two stitches over and over until you have worked nine instances of the sequence. :sm02:
