I have stayed away from patterns that have you pick up stitches so no experience doing this. Some patterns say, for example, 'pick 82 stitches around neck edge'. Other's might say 'pick up and knit 82 stitches'. In my mind's eye if you pick up and knit the stitch and then pick up and knit another, wouldn't you be leaving a little hole? It seems that you would always pick up all the stitches you need 1st and then knit them? I don't see a reason for doing this more than one way.

To see tutorial photos for picking up stitches on a "onesie" in order to attach a very full skating skirt.....

Go up to the top of the page, middle section, click "Search", then type in the box "Ladyfingers - AG doll - Tutorial - Skating Skirt".

I find it easier to pick up and knit the stitch. Just picking them up can make them very tight on your needle. Often using a small needle is suggested if you want to just pick up stitches.

My "Ladyfingers" avatar used to be a pale pink sweater, pants and tossle cap, trimmed with pink "Shaggy Shimmer" yarn - for the AG doll. The "Shaggy Shimmer" yarn was discontinued, so I decided to use a different avatar - the AG doll Wedding Gown, Veil, Garter and Bouquet.

You can download this and many other knitted patterns for the AG doll, Barbie, the 8-1/2 inch Cutsie doll and the 5-inch itty bitty baby doll.

Go to the top of the page, middle section, click "Search", then type in the box "Ladyfingers - Elaine's Doll Patterns", and click the Search box again. This will take you to a long thread (Elaine's Doll Patterns) posted by one of our members, "Daeanarah". She has been providing us with a PDF Download button for each Ladyfingers pattern, and decided to post ALL the Ladyfingers patterns in one section for easy access by knitters.

Once you get to "Elaine's Doll Patterns", scroll down through 7 pages, looking for "Daeanarah" in the Comments section. She has posted the pattern TITLE, followed by "download". Click "download" to open a very nice copy of the pattern and photos on your computer - for easy printing.

Just an FYI: I occasionally go to "My Topics" to check on how many hits my patterns are getting. So far, the AG doll Wedding ensemble has over 15,000 hits. The Rainbow Bridesmaid Gown, Head Dress and Bouquet has 8,900 hits. The most popular pattern (after the bridal gown) is the pale lavender dress with hat and boots trimmed in purple fur and a purple fur jacket to complete the ensemble - it has received over 14,500 hits. The tutorial photos for panties, a shrug, and how to attach a very full skating skirt to a "onesie" have all received over 11,500 hits. Whew!

I could never get on with picking up and knitting sts for borders and button bands, so I cheat! Knit the pieces and sew them on afterwards, saves working out how many sts per row to pick up.
I cheat too, but my way does NOT involve sewing. I pick up evenly - wherever it looks 'right' - with no regard to how many I'm supposed to have. Then, on the next row/round, I space the necessary increases/decreases to end up with the specified number of stitches. No gaps, no ripping out, best of all ... no stress!! ;)

Whether you pick up and knit or pick up all and knit the next row, when you knit the picked up stitches, knit into the back of each stitch to prevent a hole.

Picking up stitches is the most awkward part of knitting and I really have a thing about it. You could say I hate it! To be safe I usually take the extra time and pick up the stitches with a place marker, count them, and then knit them off the place markers. If you pick up and knit at the same time and find that the number of stitches is incorrect, you (perhaps only me) are left with stretched stitches that sometimes do not want to go back to their proper size.
If I fall in love with a pattern I just pray that the pick up edge that I knitted is defined nicely!!!
