I haven't made these but I have made other patterns where you cast on. I know how to do it but not how to explain it.

This will probably make no sense but will give it a try.

I use the two needle cast on sometimes called knitted cast on.

To add three in the middle of a row, I have to reverse directions, cast on the 3 then go back in the direction I was going originally.

In other words, I change hands with the needles and do the cast on then go back to the way it was before the cast on.

Maybe this will help if it makes any sense at all. I'd look on YouTube as they have tutorial videos on just about everything these days.

I am currently working on a mitered squares vest that calls for casing on in the middle of my work repeatedly. I have found the best way for me is to turn my work with the stitches to my left and do a knitted cast on, then work as usual.
