I am going to try knitting my first pocket puppy. I am either going to use an aran (worsted) yarn or a dk furry yarn with a plain dk strand. The pattern suggests a 3.5mm needle (I think, the pattern is not to hand) but is this for a single strand of dk weight wool? What size needle would you use for thinker wool? Should I start with the size on the pattern or go our to 4mm? I don't think I am a particularly tight knitter.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

If you know that you are a tight knitter, try the larger needle.
With a toy gauge is not critical, but if you are concerned make a swatch. :)

I have not knit one of these, but using the yarn you suggest, you would have to use a single strand, not two. A size 3.5 (4 US) would be too small to use a double strand of worsted or DK. Using a bigger needle 4mm (6 US0 will result in a bigger finished pup and not as dense a fabric.

Your going to have to knit a test sample to see if the fabric is tight enough to hold the stuffing. You can always put the stuffing in an old nylon sock to help hold it in but it needs to be close to the shape you knit the puppy.

I have used #5 Chenille on size 5 needles and had poked holes in the tips of my fingers but loved the look and he was big....certainly would not have fit into any pocket I have ever seen. But, I have also used Boa and Fancy Fur, and Aran weight and worsted weight too. If you are using Gypsycream patterns, you are already a winner. She writes patterns very plainly and most have free tutorials. I for one have never used another yarn with the fur type yarns. Felt they were the best if just used alone. But, others have mixed and they turned out beautiful too.
Give the swatches a try to see what you like best and what is easiest for you to work with. Good luck!
I am making a kitty kat right now with chenille polyamid. It is working up great!

I think Pat recommends you go down 1 or 2 needle sizes from what is suggested for the yarn in order to knt the fur baby tight enough to avoid stuffing showing through. Of course, that is just a starting pint and you need to see what works for ou. Have fun!

Hi Debbie, I'm away at the moment but just caught your question.

The suggested needle size is for one strand of eyelash yarn. If you want to use another yarn alongside the furry yarn I would suggest going up a size, if that is too uncomfortable then another half size perhaps. But you do need a fairly tight weave obviously.

Your puppy will be bigger than the pattern suggests of course :)
