I joined here in January so I don't know what is done near the holidays. A couple of years ago I joined an internet challenge to knit or crochet at least 50 infant hats and donate them to a local hospital. I can't remember where the challenge originated as it was forwarded to me.
Would the knitters here be interested in doing one this year? It can help use up small balls of yarn and being small they don't hang down in your lap and make you hot, even in summer. If we start now it's less than 3 per week.
Our group makes hats and scarves for the homeless during the summer. Our local soup kitchen distributes them at Christmas. Great project and one of many that KP members are involved in.

This topic comes up frequently on KP. You can check with nursing homes, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, hospitals, and any other organizations or groups that could use hand knitted and crocheted items for winter. Some churches and temples have similar programs. There is a great need right in your local area, wherever you are, so you won't have to look far.

Sure I'd be happy to do this. Do you have somewhere in mind to send them? Would we send the finished hats to you?

Sure, gg, I would be interested! A few years ago, I crocheted 64 infant hats for some charity that would send them to South Africa. Apparently, many infants die there because they don't have adequate head coverage. They also wanted you to write a letter to Obama, encouraging him to assist in funding for these unnecessary deaths. When it came time for me to send my hats, I was told they only wanted ONE hat, plus my letter to Obama. So, I called every hospital within a 100-mile radius of where I live in CT, and was told (in no uncertain terms!) that they had their "local knitters" and wouldn't have a use for my hats!

That sort of turned me off from making any more. But if you know of a hospital that would be receptive, I would be more than happy to participate with you!!

If there is a New Borns in Need Chapter near you they will take the hats. You might also try a Maternity Center or a Pregnancy Crisis Center to donate hats and other baby items.

Domestic Abuse shelters always look for infant and children's hats

IMHO, I believe in "Bloom where you're planted." If everyone on KP who wants to knit or crochet for charity explored their own location a bit, there are countless opportunities to do that right where you are. There are also links to legitimate charities online. If you go to the Topics section on the top of this KP page, type in your question and you will see many suggestions that will help you decide where you want your focus to be. Folks like you who want to help are needed all over the globe.

Last year, I put a call out for the 1898 hat for homeless veterans. 260 hats came in! We took them over to the local VA hospital for their standdown. Perhaps that would be something someone would be interested in doing.

Great idea! However I couldn't compete. I'm knitting quite a bit slower due to bilateral rotator cuff surgery.
It's not a competition, if you can't make 50 make what you can. The idea is the donation.

Our local Veterans' organization is in need of lapghans, afghans and shawls for their patients and clients. Even in summer, especially our elderly veterans, feel cold in the air conditioning.

I kinda got turned off donating. I've donated baby afghans to the local hospital. I didn't even get a thank you when I dropped them off. So I tried a homeless shelter, and a women's shelter, to no avail. My stash outgrew its room, so I thought I'd pack some up and give to a senior center. Good luck with that around here, nobody wanted it, and it was good yarn and I had picked only complete hanks/balls. So I ended up packing it and a couple of knitting needles that I don't use anymore and brought it to Goodwill.

I give hats and mittens to the elementary schools in my area. You would be surprised at how many little ones show up at school with no hat or mittens in -30 weather and just a lightweight spring jacket. The kiddies select from the "Lost and Found" box
