I am knitting a baby blanket; one which I have made in the past without problems. I've got it about 30% done and had no problems up to this point. Now, for some reason, I am having difficultly with one row of the pattern and it has stalled me out. I would really appreciate any help anyone can give me. Thank you in advance.
I am working on 153 stitches. The directions for row 4 are as follows: "Work first 4 sts in established garter st, k4, [p1,k7] across to last 8 sts, k4, work last 4 sts in established garter st."
I've counted all stitches on the needles and gone over and over the pattern. The pattern comes out with 152 sts. I don't know why I've never had problems with this before this because, as I've said, I've made it a couple of times before and also have not had problems with this row on the current blanket....until now. Should I throw in an extra p1 before those last 8 stitches??
Thank you very much for any help you can give.

When I learned math, a long time ago, even numbers did not divide evenly into odd numbers. 153 divded by 8 leaves a remainder of 1. 152 divided by 8 is 19. That means 17 repeats of P1, Knit 7, 4 knit stitches on each side and 4 garter stitches on each side.

Did you cast on 153 stitches or have you accidentally picked up a stitch somewhere?

Thank you for all the suggestions. The pattern calls for the 153 sts and that's what I've been working on all along. I don't understand why I've never had problems with this row before this. I do appreciate everyone's help.

Sounds like you got lucky the first time you made this and either dropped a stitch somewhere or only put on 152 to start with. This pattern is done in multiples of 8. 153 divided by 8 comes to 19.125. However, 19 x's 8=152. I would start over with 152 and it should work out. If this is not the first row 4 you have worked on in this pattern, somewhere something is wrong if it came out ok on the other row 4's.

It's an eight-row pattern and the other rows use the 153 sts. I think I'll just toss in an extra "p" before the last 8 sts. Thank you all!!
That is what I think needs to be done but how does this affect what it tells you to do in the next row? Perhaps the instructions for the next row, where it tells you what to do with stitch 9 will help work out the problem. Perhaps when you knitted it before you just did what you thought should be done automatically whereas this time you are thinking about it and there is a mistake in the pattern you never noticed before.

Yes you do need the Purl stitch before the last 8 stitches. Even though the repeat has 8 stitches in pattern, you continue to repeat til the last 8 stitches, this takes you one stitch into the repeat pattern (P 1, K 7), which is the Purl 1 stitch. That extra P 1 is what gives you an odd number of stitches in a row.

153 - 16 (4+4+4+4) = 137 sts for pattern
Pattern is 8 sts. 137 / 8 = 17 patterns plus 1 sts

152 - 16 (4+4 sts at each end) = 146 sts. 146 / 8 = 18 patterns plus 2 sts.

Did you perhaps count a knit stitch in the border as part of the knit 4 before the pattern began; or a knit stitch in the pattern counting towards the knit 4 towards the end of the row..

You should be able to stretch your pattern slightly to see where the stitches don't line up.
