I don't knit that much so here is my problem for a very easy pattern that I just don't get! Let's say on Row3:k2, *p8, k2, re from * Row 4: P2, K8,P2 this I get what I don't is the part where it says to decrease 1 stitch each edge. The pattern has 12 rows. I get messed up on how to do the pattern How do I stay on pattern?

((((((((((( Hmmm.......I don't see a decrease in those instructions. Perhaps send me '''entire''' pattern, top to bottom, send it in a PM (off forum), and I'll analyze it for you by popping it on needles, too.

Something I'd do anyhow with this pattern is to place stitch markers on those repeats, both of them, before, after..whatever..and verify that you are correct before moving on to the second repeat, etc.

Do you have stitch markers? They can be home made, too by using contrasting yarn, tie it around your needle in a double knot and a little looser than the needle. Or:

Use twist ties and trim the excess.

It's always possible, too that here is an error in the pattern and you are correct. LOL!!

Good luck & HAND!

neglected to say that the pattern says to decrease 1 stitch at each edge. It ends up looking like a wide based triangle with the strap at the top. You make a right half and a left half. Then the bottom. The 2 half's are over lapped.

You are working a rib pattern of 2 X 8 sts. As you decrease at each edge (ssk or k2tog) follow your pattern by knitting the knit sts, and purling the purl, as they face you. After you have your pattern established with just a few rows, you'll be able to see the ribbing easily. You didn't say if the pattern says to decease every row, every other row, at the beginning of every row? There are all different decease sequences that are used for your kind of simple pattern.

I would just decrease in pattern and then keep working. One thing that I do and learned here (I think) is to work the first stitch and then do the decrease on the 2nd and 3rd stitch. That way, your edge is a lot neater and easier to join to other pieces.

thank you all so much for your help!. The pattern name is Textured-squares bag from Knit It! Spring/Summer 2007. The bag is made in 3 parts. Right half, left half and the bottom. The right and left half's are both triangular shaped (almost) with the strap at the top center. These 2 pieces overlap I will post the picture from the magazine

I haven't the magazine nor the pattern, but her explanation plus the photos make it clear. You are decreasing on both sides from the start. That means that the edge stitches of the pattern stitch are vanishing. You need to keep track of what's happening. Blocking it all out on graph paper may help.

Thanks for drawing attention to this pattern. I think I'll make one, too.

The easiest way to stay on pattern is to write down each row on a separate index card then flip the cards to the row you are on. This way you only see one row at a time. Do keep a tally on a row counter or hash marks on each card so you know where you are at all times.

Happy knitting.
