Can anyone advise 're hotmail e mail account issues. Nor sure if it is spam or if it is a virus I have on my account
Random emails are being sent to people I have previously sent emails to or who are in my contacts but I have not sent them - they all go out at the same time but are completely different and have very odd subject matter
Do you know what I should do ?
Change my e mail account, change password, any advice appreciated
Thanks

Someone hacked your email. Changing your password will help but I would suggest getting a gmail account. I've had mine for over 5 years and it's never been hacked. You can easily import your contacts from Hotmail into gmail and then you can send an email to all your contacts with your new email.

This happened to me recently. I opened an e mail from a friend which was one of these random ones. It turned out her account had been hacked. Before I knew it, I had sent lots of people these too. I had to change my password and this sorted it.

I've had a Hotmail account for over 10 years and it has never been hacked. But I have my security set to exclusive, all junk mail/spam and mail from unknown senders goes directly into my Junk folder so I can check it out to see if it's valid. I don't open any junk mail. With Hotmail, you can right click on a message to see the text version without actually opening up the message.

I would set up a new email account, but make sure your security settings are high or exclusive. Then you'll have to let all your contacts know that you have a new email account.

I use iinet for my landline, my son's mobile, the internet connection and email. I have used them now since they started years ago as fresh faced young uni graduates working out of their mum's garage. Now they are one of Australias largest internet providers. They have strong firewalls and I have never had an email hacker get through. I also use the paid version of AVG.

There is a virus, a trojan horse I believe. It is sent to you in an email, especially one with an add on. If you open the email and the add on it will hack our address book and contact list and do precisely what you describe. It will send emails to all your contacts, and of course these emails will al contain the virus. Yes, they intend to corrupt your computer and often use it as a slave computer.

They say you should never click on or open any email from anyone you do not recognise. It is better to miss a genuine email than to import a virus. If it was a genuine email I am sure the sender will use an alternative method to contact you. They also advise never to click on or open and pop ups that appear on your screen. It may appear to be a genuine contact from AVG for example but it may not be genuine. You should never update any of your software from a pop up. It you need to update the software you can always go to the software supplier's website. Updating from a popup is a sure way to import a virus. Similarly, if you suspect you have been sent a spam email purporting to be from a software supplier, or indeed anyone, always post the suspect email to your anti virus software supplier. If you have opened the email, run your scan immediately.

If you are having problems with your contacts list being hijacked, or even suspect this, immediately run your scan and check for virus. Also, you should update your virus guard every day. You can set this to be done automatically or you can do it manually.

Hope this helps.

I'd change the password first, then wait and see if that solves the problem before going to all the bother of changing email providers. If you do go for a new account, you can just make a new one at the same provider you use if you like them. FWIW, I've used Yahoo for about 14 years and have never been hijacked. REMEMBER, GMail reads all your mail so they can tailor ads for you. Too Big Brother for my taste.

I still ask, have you run a virus check?

I have AOL free email and have never had a problem. I would definitely change my email provider.
My friend uses AOL and this happened to her. It can happen to anyone. It's most likely because you received an email from a "friend" with a strange/odd link and you clicked on it, thinking it was from a friend. But it took you to a weird website.

Do a virus scan and fix any problems. Then change your email password.

What a pain!!!

I agree with Margoc, your email has been hacked and changing the password has helped. What will help you in the future of not being hacked again, is not to open anything that looks suspicious, even sent by people on your contact lists. If in doubt, contact the person who sent it to you and asked them if they sent it out to you. Possibly their account was hacked and sending out spam. To make sure you have no tracking cookies, run your virus scanner, or you can delete all your cookies. To find your cookies, go to: C:\USERS\USER NAME(KRANKYMAX)\ROAMING\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\COOKIES Delete everything in that folder EXCEPT LOW. Also go into the LOW folder and delete those too. You will need to redo all your passwords on all the web sites.
