The trick may be in having a sharp tapestry needle to go back through the yarn. And going back far enough to stay joined. My opinion. More please.

The Russian join will work on yarn that is not 100% wool. (For 100% wool I use the spit join--you either spit on the end or use a few drops of tap water and roll the yarn ends in the pals of your hands until the yarn is joined. This works for natural fibers.)
The trick for Russian Join, as PP said, is to have a sharp enough tapestry need to go back through the yarn and the yarn ends being long enough to stay joined. Also to make the "loop" as small as possible. I've used the Russian join, and I don't like it for some yarns because unless the end "loop" is very small, the loop does show through your project.

I'm working with a wool-silk yarn and want to use the Russian join. Will it work on yarns that are not 100% wool?
I use mainly acrylics and it works OK on those. Another post says that it doesn't work so well in finer yarns. Up to a point that's true but I think it depends more on the twist of the yarn than the thickness. If a yarn does not have enough twist it's more difficult to weave the yarn end in satisfactorily. Most of my yarn stock is DK; most have a good twist but several have almost none.

I agree with the above u tube demo, the double knot/magic knot has worked for me. Love it!

Thanks Mother Hen! I had never seen this joining technique before! I'm going to experiment as I wonder how it would look while doing stockinette stitch and lace. I am also wondering about the spit join where you split the plies, cut half of them, cross the "half ends" and spit join them.

You are welcome.

Actually, once you knit the "magic knot" into the stockinette stitch you can barely find it. I have not used the other joins so cannot say. This one is so easy that I've not bothered to find out and it is just about invisible.

Everyone has to use what is comfortable for themselves. I am certainly NOT poo pooing any other join. The knot works for me and I have even used it on heavier yarn. I have never tried the other joins so I do not (cannot) have an opinion about them. I love that the Magic Knot is so easy and so fast. And what is better is that you can hardly find it in your work. I'm sure there will be a time when I feel the need to use a different join but for now I am really happy with what I'm doing and have never had one come apart.
