If your problem is with making the yo before the p1, just bring the yarn to the front first... wrap your needle with the yarn, bring it to the front again and just purl...

When doing a yo before a p you have to bring the yarn over then under to the back, just the opposite of before a k, where you bring the yarn under and then over to the back. Hope this is helpful, kind of hard to explain in writing.

This is exactly right. :thumbup: Here is a video that shows how it is done:

Here is a great video showing how to make a YO between all different kinds of stitch combinations (k-yo-k, k-yo-p, p-yo-k, p-yo-p) using both continental/picking method and English/throwing:
