Re-Felting

About 8 years ago I made a felted tote for someone. They passed away and their family sent me all of the woman's yarns...and that tote I made for her. I decided to "experiment"...cut the strap handles off...and refelted it...I'm still in the process of "reshaping" it but I now have a nice little basket/bowl!

What different things can you make with them? I'm new at this and have never felted. :?:
I made a dog carrier once...you can make pretty much anything.
Love it!! I have been hooked on felting the last month or so. I'm on my 2nd pair of slipper clogs. I just love to felt.

Some felt very thick. I make coasters, trivets, pot holders, etc. The thinner ones can make purses, ipad covers, cell phone holders, appliques, art work, whatever you can imagine. My sister is making crazy quilts. I am cutting out fall colored leaves to make a wreath. There are quite a few books out , I needle felt and cut flowers from them and I use templates and stencils readily available at Hobby Lobby and Michaels. I haven't looked but I'm sure there must be some tutorials on u tube.

For your Akita's?

 .....I wonder how much yarn, one would need for my Digby. I would have to figure out how to put wheels on it though
HA HA, no for someones little terrier! Digby needs a wagon to pull...like a covered wagon.
Love it. Bet my kitties would too!
It does sort of resemble a cat bed doesn't it? This woman wanted a tote bag in "watermellon" colors..getting it back after she passed away felt "odd". Now it holds all sorts of knitting "goodies".
Ok, I give in, how do you felt things or where can I go to learn?

Thanks. Jean,

My Bossies would love a cuddle cup. Especially Maddie, she will be giving birth in about 2 to 21/2 weeks. I am so excited.
Set your washer on lowest level, hottest wash. Throw in a couple of old jeans.Add a little bit of detergent. Put your item to be felted in a zippered pillow case cover.l Use my heavy duty cycle for max agitation. Only wool and animal fiber will felt. However, it should felt with a minimum of 50% wool. You should check it every 5 minutes, and when it begins to felt, watch it closely because it can go from almost done to overfelted almost instantly. IT is ready when the stitches disappear. Do not let it go thru the cycle. Remove ir from the waher squeezing out as much water as you can and plunge it into cold water in the sink. rinse it, squeeze it, and use as many towels as it takes to wick out as much water as you can. Work with it like clay to shape it and block it as necessary to dry.
WOW :) Was I clueless on that one. I had no idea. Thanks for telling me.
The only part I don't like about felting..when making a hat I have to keep trying it on through the felt process...usually I put a stupid plastic shower cap on to do this..then put the soaking wet hat on to see if it fits. I'm sure I entertain God at moments like that. I'm sure he see's me...nudges St. Peter and says "Hey Pete, she's at it again!".
That's ok, I am a standing joke with God, he is always shaking his head and chuckling at me.

:)

Jean
That's the way I felt and I am so used to my washer and the yarns I use that I don't have to be tha vigilent anymore.. Most everything gets felted well in one wash cycle. I do check it several times before the end of the cycle because you are never 100% sure it will felt the same, it may not.
I NEVER let a felted item go through the spin cycle..there's no saving it after that!

It's great fun. Why don't you get an old sweater from the thrift store and felt it You really can't mess them up much and you can always make something out of them. Just jump in and do it. I's great fun.
