Does anyone know where I can find or knows themselves what would be the replacement yarn forMinerva Veleen Yarn? It says I need 8 balls, but I have NO idea where to begin to find the proper size/weight replacement for this.

I have been scouring the internet for a good while but can find nothing but an out of date color chart for it.

I found that earlier, but **face turns red**

They say it is 2fold, 2 oz. ball of 65% Wool and 35% rayon, 300 yards.

I am such a newbie I guess, and am totally LOST in this description. I do not know where to start to look. I am not crazy about wool

(I can see the welts and hives rising all over me now **giggle**) :-(

2fold means 2ply, you don't have to go with a wool...this appears to be a "lace weight" yarn. Browse lace weights and find something that catches your eye and meets your needs.

In defense of wool, this isn't your grandmothers wool! The wool of my youth (I'm 56) was itchy! Today's wools have come a long way. You can find lovely merino's that feel like butter, alpaca that will be delightful.

That appears to be a coned yarn for machine knitting as opposed to a hand knitting yarn. I suppose it could work, yet I don't think the gauge will be the same. This yarn appears to be thicker. If you divide the yards given for a pound by 16 (ounces) you come up with a little over two hundred yards per ounce. The minerva yarn figures out to 150 yards per ounce.

***HUGE HUG***

You have been a GEM helping me sort through this!

I will keep sorting through yarn sites I have bookmarked. I have doubts Hobby Lobby or any place like that would have the 2 ply lace weight. Will shoot some e mails off before I begin "The Great Lace Trek"

You ALL here have been such a HUGE help! I am SO glad I found you out here!

You don't have to stick to the "2 ply", you need a yarn that will work with the gauge in the pattern. Since this is a "vintage" yarn that the pattern calls for, you will find that yarns have changed and continue to change since that pattern was written. Good luck.

I checked around, too and even on Ebay for the yarn = 0. I'm getting hits for Velveen but not Veleen.

TTYL!

Try checking the gauge on the pattern and compare it to gauge on other labels. I think Lionbrand has a place on their site that tells you basic gauges on yarns. That might give you an idea of what type to look for. Remember too that processing techniques have changed a lot over the years so a vintage type yarn will be hard to get an exact match.

This particular yarn is "vintage" and doesn't actually fit into current standards...doesn't mean it's impossible it just means it's going to take a little more leg work on research.

I've run into this before with patterns that my mother designed..she designed them in the 50's and 60's when yarns weren't quite as "standardized" as they are now.

Silk City Fibers Wool Crepe Deluxe. You can see it here: http://www.silkcityfibers.com/SilkCity/pmFrameSetConstructor.jsp?modeOption=DISPLAY&txtWfsFrameSetID=MAIN_FRAME&txtStpStProvCode=

You can buy it here: http://www.knititnow.com/knititnow/Store/ConeDetails.cfm?itemid=79

If you take a look at my blog you can follow a vintage project I am currently working on that calls for Minerva Velveen. I am using the Wool Crepe Deluxe and it's working out great. http://vintagestitchesandstyles.wordpress.com/ This yarn is fabulous!

One cone will make a sweater. Two cones will make a dress.

I hope this helps!!

Just now saw this post. The SC Wool Crepe is not itchy at all. It has a very smooth texture.
