I have a Brother KR850 ribber. It has a presser bar, but no sponge. Is there supposed to be a sponge?

No. Some Ribbers do have sponge bars, like my Brother bulky and Silver Reed 860 mid guage. You have to check each model to be sure.

850's have a grey plastic bar - wish the main bed ones were as well - would save a fortune!!

Most of the standard gauge ribbers have presser bars in them....But I do find that a sponge bar works better when working lace with gossimer and lace weight yarns...
