I often use the long tail cast on but am unsure of what is the right or wrong side. After casting on, it appears as though I have knitted this row so when I start my pattern, is this considered the right side of my work and should I continue using row 2 ? Sometimes the pattern starts with Row 1 (RS) and am confused-wasn't my cast on row the RS? Hope someone can explain this to me. Thanks in advance.

This question gets ask a lot. I consider it a cast on, not a row. I do this because of the statement you made. A lot of patterns start directions with row 1. I do the cast on, whatever one I chose, then I am ready to work row 1. Often the patterns end with finishing the pattern and then bind off. I think not counting the cast on or the bind off part of the pattern makes the piece match on the ends. jinx

But I believe that for the second row after the cast on you would have to purl to have the same look of stitch - would make it like a stockinette stitch. If you wouldn't do this, your cast on (instead of having the smooth look) would look more like a purl row facing you when you flip it around.

I'll be honest I just learned long tail cast on and never thought which was right or wrong just simply started with row 1 of pattern. hummmm question got me thinking now about this.

I agree with Mary Smith. Often the long tail cast on I love to use (the Norwegian cast on) looks like a right side row, so I somehow fudge it to start with row 2 for my first row after the cast on if possible, especially if it specifies (and it usually does) that row 1 is a right side row.

the right side of you cast on is the second row you knit, most pattern do not care about this because there are so many cast on you can do. I also like the longtail cast on and teach it in my begining knitting classes, you as a knitter have to make the pattern work for you. If the 1st row of the pattern is the right side row, you can do this a couple of ways one is if there is a border make sure you do a odd number of row, if it goes right into the pattern, do row 2 then go back and start with 1 then repeat 2, if this can not be done, purl one row and it usually does not show. One last thought if you want to know in the middle of you knitting if you are on the right side of your cast on as you are starting your row the tail in one the other side of you knitting. Hope this helps.

Ya'll talking about a long tail cast on got me to thinking. I use a two needle cast on when making my toys and I usually do what ever the first row is unless at says to knit, because I read or head that with a two needle cast on you have alredy done a knit row.
Now I wounder if that is right.
