Got this pretty pattern from Halcyon Yarn for a Shell Lace Scarf by Gwynn Erickson that I am trying to knit from my alpaca yarn and the rows don't come out correctly. I cast on 29 stitches as instructed. It has a seed stitch border of 3 rows/stitches all around then row 1 of the lace patterns and all WS rows are purl. Row 2 is K2tog, *k5, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso; repeat from * to last 2 stitches, end last repeat ssk. Every RS row ends with the "*...to last 2 stitches, end last repeat ssk." It always comes out so that the ssk comes in the middle of the knitted stitches?? For instance, here's another row where the ssk would come in the middle of the k stitches. Row 10 K2tog, *K1, yo, k3, you, k4, sl1-k2tog-psso; end last repeat ssk. Row 1 also doesn't come out right - P1, K1; repeat, end p1 so I would have 2 purl stitches at the end of the row?? What am I missing here?

Adding pattern link but since it's a paid pattern, I can't see it

Can you please either type the instructions you are having trouble with, exactly? or provide a picture of the section of pattern? I feel that maybe I'm missing some context and I can't see the pattern itself.

From what you have written, I believe that Row 1 is ok. It will have a 3 stitch, seed-stitch border on each end, leaving 23 stitches in the middle for the pattern. Since 23 is an odd number, it makes sense that it would start and end with a purl stitch.

There don't seem to be enough stitches to complete row 1 and still have 6 edge stitches.

Edited to say: I just cast on 29 stitches and did row 1 and I come up short by 3 stitches. I don't get the k2tog at the beginning and the ssk at the end of the row, there are no matching yos.

What I typed is directly from the pattern. I have blacked out portions of the pattern so as not to violate copyright law.

Row 1 looks correct to me.
Note row 1 starts with a P1,k1....not a K1, p1.
If it started with a k1,p1, then you would have 2 purls in a row at the end.
Since it starts with a P1,k1... The last stitch in row 1 is a single purl.
That's what I did wrong! Thanks, that solves one problem!

Cast On 29 Stitches.

row 1 of the lace patterns and all WS rows are purl.

Row 2 - K2tog, *k5, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso;
repeat from * to last 2 stitches, end last repeat ssk.

Every RS row ends with the "*...to last 2 stitches, end last repeat ssk."
.....................................................
29 cast on stitches minus 6 edge stitches (3 per side) = 23 stitches for the stitch pattern.

Shell Lace Pattern is a multiple of 11+1.
(2 repeats=22 sts =1=23 sts)

Row 2 - (Do your 3 stitches of seed st border) then ... K2tog,= 2 sts.
*k5, yo, k1, yo, k2, sl1-k2tog-psso;= 11
repeat from * to last 2 stitches, end last repeat ssk.=
*k5, yo, k1, yo, k2,=10 (total so far 21 sts) end with a ssk instead of the sl1-k2tog-psso on the last 2 sts of the Shell Lace Pattern.
Then finish the row with your 3 stitches of seed st border.

I'm glad the problem is fixed, but I just want to explain about the reason for the k2tog at the beginning and ssk at the end. To make a pattern more balanced, they rarely begin or end with a double decrease (sl1-k2tog-psso). If the pattern began with the repeat and not the k2tog and ended with sl1-k2tog-psso, one edge of your piece would be straight while the other would look like a wave even with a 3 stitch border. To prevent this, that double decrease is split up into a k2tog at the beginning and an ssk at the end with full repeats in between.
