Great write up!!
I just have one niggling question. Exactly what to do with SKP? It’s a decrease, but leaning which way?
Is it slip 1, k1, pass slipped stitch over?

Skp is left leaning. I'd use ssk. Knitter's choice.

Yes - it is a decrease leaning to the left.
I just frogged mine. I was knitting with handspun alpaca and just did not like the way it was coming out. I don't think the yarn was quite right for the hat so I will try something else, like a worsted wool. The alpaca will be used elsewhere.

You're welcome. I should have pointed out that ssk and skp produce the same result. I find my ssk to be neater than my skp so I use ssk. Also, I learned it first so was already accustomed to using ssk. Use the one you prefer for whatever reason.
