Any ideas of a quick and easy shawl pattern to have when I stop over in Dubai next month. I don't have any long sleeved tops and realise a shawl would be very useful to "cover up" Should be able to get it made before departure date on June 20th
Many thanks in advance

A fellow KP'er posted this last week sometime and I thought it was beautiful and simple. You can make it from whatever yarn you like I suppose as I think maybe the heavier yarn will make to too warm in Dubai. It is substantial instead of see through so if you need to "cover up" it would do the trick for you.

Here is the link to the thread. In the thread is the link to the pattern. Enjoy! Have fun in Dubai =)

I went back and found the pattern link as well:

Have you checked daytime temperatures in Dubai in June? You can google this information and then you will have a better idea of how much "cover up" you want.

I went to Hawaii in September for my GD's wedding, and even the lightest cover-ups were too much to wear; so there I was with my 82-year-old upper arms exposed. I would have collapsed from heatstroke if I had tried to put on anything other than a few strings of covering. I did make a very light shrug to take along, but it was just too much.

Unless you can handle the heat well, be very careful what you wear. I have a history of landing in foreign hospitals suffering from the heat so I speak from experience. There are patterns for "string" cover-ups that would allow air circulation. Ravelry has many of them.

I hope you find something suitable and that you have a lovely stop in Dubai. That's one place I never have visited and I envy you.

In June, the temperatures are stifling. I lived in the Middle East for five years. The best thing to wear are clothes made of cotton. Polyester will make you pass out. Just have some blouses that cover to your elbow and not tight. Dubai is a lot better then Saudi Arabia where I lived.

I have been in the Middle East, and recommend that you cover up as much as possible, out of respect for local customs. If you can, get hold of light cotton clothes. Some beach caftans might help? Also, unless you find Dubai a little more relaxed than it was, please keep your head covered.

I had a friend who worked as a midwive in Saudia Arabia, where she was required to wear the full burkhar and was not allowed to drive. Most of her colleagues wore underneath the teeniest lingerie you can imagine in order to feel a little bit cooler

I have spent many a shopping weekend in Dubai when I worked in a neighboring country. You will find Dubai is very cosmopolitan compared to other nearby countries. Except for a few short cooler evenings in the winter around December, the days are hot and the evenings are warm. As a visitor, you do not need to cover your hair. General rule is keeping your shoulders and knees covered, so wear tops that have a sleeve,(avoid tank tops) and wear skirts, pants or long shorts that cover your knees.Yes to cotton whenever you can.

We have stopovered in Dubai several times and will be doing so again this July. The heat in June/July is really oppressive and you really don't want to be doing anything much except sitting around the hotel pool which will hopefully be heat controlled. If it isn't it's like swimming in warm soup. I have always worn short sleeved tops with no problems. Dubai is very cosmopolitan and you see the whole range of clothing from mini skirts to full burkhas. Maybe take a chiffon scarf to cover your head if need be but I have never had to. Enjoy the place - it's quite fascinating

Well, let's not go there, "when in Rome".. etc, but I do get what you're saying. It often all boils down to the big difference between the East (honour) and the West (justice).
First, they do not seem to care for the "when in Rome...."
There is a difference between honour and justice?

Yes. Honour is when you would kill a family member who leaves Islam to change their religion, or even become educated if that is not approved by the "hierarchy". The honour of the family and religion is paramount. Justice is an individual having rights that may be different to the family and religion. It's a huge topic, one that involves passionate discussion! Having been brought up in the old Judeo/Christian tradition with emphasis on justice and mercy, I have difficulty with the "honour" tradition, but it is very valid for millions of people, so I don't want to judge what others believe...

Wow. No wonder people have fought over religions forever. There's so many different dogmas.

I have been there. For your own security in public places, cover your knees, elbows, and NO plunging necklines. Also, no hugging, kissing, or hand-holding between adults in public. If you need more information, feel free to PM me.
