I live in the Houston area, but I decided to make tube knee socks for my daughter and her girls up in norhern Ohio last winter. That was one big, long, cold winter.
I found sock yarn at Herrschners ... Premier wool free yarn that makes a pattern as you knit without bobbins and changing colors.

Beautiful socks. I would love to make them but don't do dpn's (you all already know why) and don't have a grip on the Magic Loop as of yet. If I could knit them flat the use a side seam or seam in such a way that would not be uncomfortable I would be making socks right now. My feet stay so cold that I even have to wear them in the summer in Texas. Just my way of life these days. Keep it cold and breathe and stay bundled up or, turn the a/c off and stop breathing! Boy, what a choice, so, yes wish I could make beautiful socks like these.

You might be surprised with a seam because the yarn is so fine. A seam might not be uncomfortable. I use # 2 double pointed needles... beause the yarn is more like thread than yarn.
