Hi Tippy, I think you need DPN( double pointed needles) for socks, not a circular. Usually socks are knit with small needles, size 2, for socks that will last. It depends on your pattern and yarn. This is a site for a sock calculator, it should help you with your project. Good luck!

I was looking at the site you posted, If I knitted a gauge square should it be in Stocking Stitch or Rib?
