I'm looking through my stash now. I found a pattern called Eye of the Partridge (I think it was on Lion) that uses 2 colors: Row 1 (Dark) *Sl, K1*; Row 2 (dark) P; Row 3 (light) *K1, S1*; row 4 (light) P. The Slips are purlwise. I have a little over 3 oz. of a varigated so I am useing that for my dark and then I'll use up complimentary colors for the light. It will be a scarf.

I often hear people ask about what they do with the whatevers.
I have a storage locker and it is full of finished items and loaded with boxes of yarn. Th track shown is one of many when I was forced to move to another locker. Gave me a chance to organize?????

I knit for specific charities so when I complete something it goes in a box and when the box is full, it is in the mail.
I try to use up skeins. If I make a hat and there is enough yarn for another hat of some size (small , med. or large), I make one more even if I stripe it to use up the main color.

That's the nice thing about knitting for charity - doesn't usually matter size or color! Just have fun with it. I do a lot of experimenting too.
I make hats for chemo patients and also hats for the military to wear off duty. These all get shipped out and number in the hundreds. The items I store are made for any future great grands that might happen. I am 85 and may not get to see them. I also knit afghans for the local VA hosp and I am active in the Amer Leg Aux, so you can see I have a reason for everything.
We are all doing are part to keep the eccomony moving. I have yarn for knitting machine as well as regular yarn. I saw somewhere to take 3 to 4 thread of the fine yarn and the slowly change it by changing one thread to a different color one stran at a time until you have change so that all 3-4 strans are the same color. I have to try this with all the machine yarn I have.
I have used the bags that you hook the vacum cleaner up to and suck the air out. They lay flat and you can see what you have and stack them up too.
How does that work for you? I wondered about them.. Do they stack well?

I have my stah in boxes that a rheam of 8 1/2 x 11 paper comes in. They are not too heavy to put up on the closet shelves. I write the color on the end. They stack nice too. I got them free at work when I worked.
Those are a nice size. I get the office boxes that are that size. Every once in a while Staples has the 10 packs on sale with a rebate and they are free!
I admit Im addicted to yarn and a member of the SABLE (Stash Accumulating Beyond Life Expectancy) Club with 14 storage boxes each in 2 homes. These are divided by color, baby, cotton, acrylic, sock, etc. However, Im usually always ready to go for SEX (Stash Enhancement eXpedition) to a local yarn shop. Every other year I go through my stash to make an inventory, give away what I wont use, and remember what I have to keep my 2011 New Years resolution to stay out of Michaels, give away the coupons and quit buying yarn. So far I'm succeeding.
I was at my local Ace Hardware store yesterday and they had something that would be great for stash. It was a clear plastic 'box' similar in size to a paper box. There was a zipper around 3 size of the top. Was $7.99 ot 8.99. I didn't get any as I was in a hurry and I want to evaluate my need for more storage before I buy. Did look like it would work though.
I thought I was bad!!!! At least now I am trying to get organized. Sorting into boxes. I am trying to make things using up the smaller amounts. I found a pattern called Eye of the Partridge and I'm changing a few things to make a scarf. I think it will turn out well! And colorful!

I admit I'm terrible about accumulating yarn but I'm knitting a baby hat or a chemo hat a day to give away to the hospital or a warm hat for the homeless. The stash is starting to dwindle slowly. And I'm also addicted to knitting, even at traffic lights, in the dentist chair and in the throne room!
I remember a few years back when I walked a picket line at my place of work, I knitted a bandage for the leper colonies. I hung a bag on my wrist for the yarn and talked and walked and knitted.
I use big plastic totes for yarn that aren't see thru. To solve the problem of knowing what is inside,I take part of each label and tape it to the lid. Then I can see at a glance just what it contains. I also sort mine by colors and by either plain or fuzzy. and varigated/ombres also have their own bin.Baby or fine yarns are also separate. Yes, I have many, many totes and they are kept in my basement on metal utility shelves.
For my yarn I have boxes that I number. I have a notebook that I keep a record of all the boxes and the contents are listed by brand color wieght. depending on when put aside. now I do not want to lose the book.
I am trying so hard to organize my stash. All my acrylic afghan yarn is in 3 large black garbage bags in one closet and all the natural fiber yarn that I have bought since I started knitting 6 months ago are in boxes and bags in in another closet. I found a flat clear plastic box on wheels yesterday that I am going to put my good stuff in after sorting it in ziplock bags and slide under my bed. I have to do something so I will know what I have. Right now I keep finding patterns and ordering more yarn. YIKES!!
I am really good at accumulating yarn. My husband bought me a 24 foot trailer to put my stash in. I have it sorted by content, weight/size, color and packed into the trailer with heavier yarns on one side and light/finer yarns on the other. The totes and boxes are marked like "WA" for worsted acrylic. A box marked "RHWA" would be Red Heart Worsted Acrylic. I have a 13 gallon trash can in the house with cotton/rayon rug yarn in that I am knitting up into heavy sweaters for myself.
I am currently working on children's charity sweaters in multi colors in acrylic worsted -- Red Heart at the moment.
I keep my wool yarn in ziplock bags to keep the little flying nasties out of it. I have some in the XXX bags, some in XX bags and some in 2 gallon bags. I never have leftover yarn when I knit socks because when I finish one pair I start the next pair with the excess and when the first bit of yarn is gone I attach the next yarn. Makes for interesting socks. I probably have enough sock yarn for 120 pair more. I kid you not.
