I just purchased a beautiful stole pattern from Interweave (Bouquet Stole) that calls for Halcyon Yarn - Block Island. It is 35% hemp, 35% cotton, and 50% rayon. It calls for one cone for the pattern. Unfortunately, that one cone is $59 and I want to make several for Christmas gifts. Does anyone have another yarn that I may substitute for the Halcyon? Thanks.

Hemp is a plant fibre. Cotton will work. So will linen. Or linen and cotton blends.

The drape of the finished item will change if you use an animal fibre or a man made fibre as a substitute.

The yarn is an uneven weave, it gets slightly smaller and larger as it goes and is not shiny at all. If you want the look that this gives the garment then you should try to find a yarn that is like that.
A smooth yarn will make it look very different, which might be just fine for you. It just depends on what you want.
