Today I stopped at Salvation Army Thrift Store. Old Yarn $1.95/skein, Used yarn - 1 gallon zip lock baggie, mostly full $6.95 - $7.95. A used electric knife $9.95 (was looking at it for cutting foam for pillows). Needless to say, I left the yarn and if you watch sales you can get a NEW electric knife for $10.00. There is a sign on the door stating that all proceeds stay in the community.

EDIT: JUst found this
"The Truth:
According to the Salvation Army, Commissioners W. Todd Bassett and his wife Carol A. Bassett jointly received basic living allowances and grants totaling $64,210 for 2004 plus housing valued at $34,116. That is still considerably less than the salaries of some of the other top charities.

Could you please post the source of this information. I do not believe it is accurate. My sister was a social worker for one of these organizations and I know how it works in a community.

Guidestar (online) provides IRS information for 501(c)(3) tax deductible organizations.

Three years ago, Wounded Warriors Project released all information to Guidestar. They stopped doing that. At time of last report, the CEO's salary was well over $600K.

If you want to get the true story of how efficient a US charity is, go to the charity section of the Better Business Bureau's website.

http://www.bbb.org/

type in your zip code, and click on charity.

As for the March of Dimes - over 75% of their income goes to their programs. It's in their annual report.

The original post has been refuted on snopes.com as outdated and innacurate.

Thanks! Folks shouldn't just post stuff like that without first doing a little due diligence because some readers will believe anything they read and continue to spread it around. We sure can do a lot better with the ratio but many of these organizations are BIG business. They have directors who approve these big salaries. Thanks again for the information on finding the facts.

My cousin sent it to me and he doesn't usually share anything he hasn't tried to verify. But I am not saying that he verified it. I'm not the best at on line searches but maybe another KP would know where to go to check this out.

It seems like posting this chart has upset some of you and that certainly wasn't my intention. I thought I was passing on good information and apologize if I am in error. When I have a chance I will check it the links you've provided.

Not upset but the list was just a snapshot and no indication of who published this information. It is easy to go to Snopes.com to verify. Many of us have relatives and friends who send us jokes, etc. just do a little checking first before passing it on. I am not offended, it just looked wrong to me.

Don't know about the rest, but when my son was born the March of Dimes helped with hospital bill for extensive tests.

27 years later, When he had his heart transplant the American Heart Ass. would not help in any way for anything.
