Before I learned to knit I had seen sweaters that had pictures on them. They came in kits from a company that sold them in the back classified sections of craft and needlework magazines in the '80s. The sweaters could have a holiday scene with snowmen and raindeer, etc. or even a school theme with kids and a schoolbus on a road.Does anyone remember the name of the company that made these?

What you are looking for is a technique called intarsia.... Knitting a design into a section of your work.

This type of project does not require a kit, but if you know the name of the technique (INTARSIA), you can SEARCH for patterns that will be exactly what you are looking for.

Do not remember any company that does it... However I do know that Red Heart does have some Christmas patterns available free. Also check on Ravelry.com for other patterns with "intarsia" sweaters.

Are you on Facebook? There is a Facebook page dedicated to vintage Knit O Graf patterns.

I love social media; i.e. facebook, instagram, twitter, etc. too many to list - it's so much more than just goofy selfies and pictures of what food people are eating. It's a wonderful way to keep up with what is going on in the world as well as a great resource to find just about anything you want. If it exists in the world, social media can help you find it.

Etsy also has some resources for Knit-O-Graf patterns:
http://www.etsy.com/search?q=knit%20o%20graf&ship_to=US

as well as eBay and Vintage Knits:

Thank you everyone for all your responses and time. I do know about intarsia, have done it a time or two. The Sweaterscapes sweaters are like the ones I saw in the '80s. I even have 2 of their books. I also found sweaters called Storybook knits that are like and could possibly be the ones I am thinking of. I found out that sweaters like these have a following, there are "Ugly Sweater Parties". The sweater can be very elaborate in the design, too much for todays' styles. I am glad to have all these great links from everyone. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!
