When my children were fairly small, the oldest (age about 9), had a marionette show which we put on in various nearby towns. After the play she would stand out front with her clown marionette and make him have a conversation with the kids. It was amazing that they crowded right up to the stage and engaged the marionette just as if he was a real person, completely ignoring my daughter. It seemed as if they really believed he was real and had no connection with her!
