I desparatly need help with binding off toe up socks. I tried a different bind off - Lori's Twisty Bind Off - and now I can't get my sock on. How does one put in an afterthought life line in 1x1 ribbing? I know how to put one in stockingnette but not ribbing. Could someone PLEASE help me with a stretchy bind off? Thank you so very much. You folks are closer than my LYS and have extended access.

Here is a YouTube video for putting an afterthought lifeline in ribbing:

I needed it for exactly the same reason that you do.
This is a good video in theory, but more difficult in practice. Especially on the fine sock yarn, it is almost impossible to do this and have all the stitches picked up from the same round of knitting. I agree that the current bind off needs to be undone one stitch at a time. Yup, time to tink. And Cat Bordhi's bind off is the way to go. Good luck! Sorry for this trouble.

Thank you all sooo much. I will be using the afterthought lifeline. Not the easiest to see shades of purple on a size 1 needle. I tried picking out my bind off but it has a twist to it and I was really making a mess. I think I would enjoy making socks....if I could only get them on! Thanks again.

I make all my socks toe up and use Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. It is very easy to make and is very easy to get socks on.
Does this bind off flare at the top? The last time I tried it, it looked almost like a ruffle. Maybe I over compensated in trying to make sure I could get the sock on?

I was going to post a site for stretchy, non-flare bind off and it turned out to be Lori's Twisted Bind Off, so that won't do. :)
There's another similar bind off that uses the twist, but instead of passing the worked stitch over, it's put back on the left needle and worked together with the next stitch (it's Tillybuddy on Youtube).

What I wanted to say is, unless you left a long tail that got woven in, you won't have enough yarn to do a stretchy cast off in place of a tight one, unless you undo one more row of work.

Thanks for reminding me. I don't think I left a long enough tail - only about 6-8 inches.

If you can crochet, use a hook a the same mm as you needle or even a size smaller is ok. You knit (or purl) with the hook instead of your right needle, then when you have two stitches on your hook, do a yarn over and pull thru both loops, then knit (or purl) your next stitch, yarn over and pull thru both, repeat to the end. Nice a stretchey and easy if you are familiar with a crochet hook.

The Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off does look a bit flared...until you put it on. Once it is on your leg, after easily slipping over your heel, it looks perfectly normal... no flare...not even a hint of a ruffle.

Thanks everyone. I tried to insert an afterthought lifeline. Not enough light to see stitches - shades of purple on size 1 needles. I labeled number of rows and type of cast off. I have enough yarn to make another pair. I have Cat's book so think I will try the [email protected] with the Sweet Tomato Heel and Jeny's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off. You've been a great help and encouragement.
