Twisted stitch directions

Hand knitting...

Knit into the back of the stitch instead of the front. In your pattern do you do the twisted stitch across the row and then purl the next row? If so, then you would purl normally. Twisted stitches tighten up the work, so your tension will need to be looser than normal.
