I have been so inspired by what I see and read here' that at 56, I would like to learn to knit hats and mittens for charity. What length circular needles should I get to make these items? I would hope to make things for ages kids to adult men. Thanks for your help!

Or you could get a set of 16" circulars and 7" or 8" double pointed needles. I prefer sets of 5, and you can get inexpensive sets of bamboo circulars and double points on eBay. If you decide to use the magic loop method, you really need to invest in a high quality circular needle, of about 40" long, though I've used 32". I like the Hiya Hiya and Addi brands.

  That's what I use, and it's a good way to learn to use double-pointed needles since, when you switch to them at the very end, you're already almost finished and it's nowhere near as awkward as beginning a circular knit on dpns. (Though I prefer them for all circular knits.)

Lots of good ideas already, but another option would be to use two circular needles. That will handle anything from a couple of stitches on each cable to projects much larger than hats.

I started knitting at 52, I use a 16" circular for all the hats I knit & you will have to use double point needles to reduce for the top of the hat. As for mittens, you will most likely need to the entire mitten on double point needles. I knit hats for a after school program for under privileged children. I try to donate 25-30 each fall. You are going to love doing this.
