I am a new knitter. I know how to knit in the round, and have knit 3 pair of socks. I can knit, purl and do simple patterns. I would like to make a sweater for myself next, but most sweater patterns look like they would be too difficult for me. I would like to make one out of a bulky or heavy worseted wool. Any one have a pattern you think I might like that would be simple???

The Paton "Top Down" booklet is a staple for me. It has both crew neck and cardigan pattern. Fits well, has easy instructions, and is literally seamless. I've lost count of how many I've made with these instructions.

From what I can tell, this booklet has been discontinued. :) I am in the same situation as the original poster, and am overwhelmed by the patterns out there for a sweater. Anybody have a simple one they can share?

Knitting pure & simple patterns. Knit from Neck down on circular needles. SUPER easy, spectacular results, especially with varigated yarns. They are sold in yarn shops. Haven't really looked to see if they can be purchased online. They do have a website and I think you can see who sells them in your area. My favorites are womens cardigan, pull over and the childs cardigan and pull over. I have made a BUNCH for family & friends of all shapes and sizes. Do the math and you can make Any size sweater out of any gauge yarn you choose. Yep I went and looked they do have a listing by state where the patterns can be purchased. I just discovered you can purchase and download their patterns from the website. they are relaively inexpensive they have lots of new ones, I'm headed back to get more. You will not be disappointed by these patterns, they are wonderful, just make sure you get the ones that are knit in one piece. Good Luck.

I can't find that booklet either! Patons has a lot of pattern booklets but most seem to be mixing knitted and crocheted together, and I can't tell whether they are top down or not, even though I put that in my search.

Just a warning about the Pure and Simple top down cardigans - they are cut very very full at the armpit/top of sleeve - it bunches up on me. I'd go down a size or two when working that part of the pattern.

Wow GG you are absolutely right.....it has been a while since I knitted with these patterns. But, the raglan sleeves are supposed to be big. But my granddaughters didn't like them big so much. So....my solution was to stop increasing at the sleeves sooner than the pattern called for, about 1 - 2 inches worth of stitches, it worked out great.

My grand daughters also liked them longer (to cover their fannies) so I did that also. I did some that went below their knees, with matching hats, sometimes scarves and leg warmers.... out of wild or bright varigated color yarns. They LOVED them.

When the middle one started kindergarten her teachers said to my daughter that they couldn't wait until Sadie come in every day just to see what kind of sweater she would be wearing. I must have made them 20 -30 sweaters. I knit so many that my daughter said ENOUGH she had no where to store them. LOL 2X  :)

Hi,

I have been searching for directions of the first sweater I ever made. The directions were for straight needles but you likely could convert it to circulars up to the armpits. The pattern is written in multi sizes. The whole family got them one year for Christmas. My first one was with a knit group in our local knit shop. I have seen it free on the net but can not locate now. I have a copy up stairs but can't get up there ATM. I will look to see if there is an url on it so I can locate it on the computer. It is called the Candid Portugese sweater.

In the mean time you could check these out.

I don't mind paying for a good pattern. I am finding that many of the free ones have to be edited.

I have only been back to knitting (didn't knit for 35 years!) for the last four months, and felt like a real novice. Little by little I'm figuring things out, and enough to know many times when the free patterns are a bit "off."

This pattern is really cute, and it still comes in a number of sizes, which is an excellent aspect.

I love to teach people to knit & the first thing I say is this...'DO NOT let knitting intimidate you. If you do, you will not enjoy the process, it will be stressful instead of relieving stress & definitely not fun'. In knitting, as with all other things, you must take control of it, not let it take control of you. Knit with the thought, 'I can do this.' Making mistakes, ripping back, twisting & dropping stitches are all a part of not only learning to knit but knitting itself. I do it all the time & I have been knitting for over 50 years. Just enjoy!!
Happy Knitting!
