I have been using KK looms for a few months now, and I have a question about what stitch is a "knit" stitch. Is it when you e-wrap twice around the loom, then lift the lower (first) loop over the upper one, letting it fall to the center? Or is it when you e-wrap once, then lay the working yarn above and on the outside of the peg, "scoop" the working yarn from beneath the wrapped stitch and hold the loop formed while moving the original loop off the peg and then placing the loop in your fingers onto the now empty peg?
This is very wordy for a simple question, I am sorry, it would be so easily asked in person! But I know no one locally. Which one is meant in a pattern where it says 'knit'?

I do loom knitting too. I've watched youtube. I have seen what they call the knit stitch two different ways sort of confusing. So I just did an afghan on my authentic kniitting board s loom I e wrapped and lifted over. Turned out great.

I am not as experienced as a lot of the loom knitting ladies on this site, but my answer is yes to your first question. That is the way you do the knit stitch. The second stitch you described is the purl stitch. Good luck!

When I write a pattern I usually have what stitches are used: Knit stitch to use example k= ew = ewrap known as the twisted knit stitch, K= ewrap loom twice and lift bottom stitch over top stitch

K =
Step 1:
Place working yarn, in front the peg and above the loop on the peg.

Step 2:
Insert knitting tool from bottom up (behind the loop on the peg). Catch the working yarn
with the tool, thus forming a loop.

Step 3:
Hold the newly formed loop (from Step 2)
Step 4:
Take the loop that was originally on the peg, off the peg.

Step 5: Place the loop you are holding (from step 3) on the peg.
Pull on the working yarn to tighten the stitch.

Flat stitch knit = is where the yarn is placed on the front of the peg above the stitch on the loom and you lift the bottom stitch over the top working yarn.

K = u stitch is where you place the working yarn between peg 1 and 2 and lift bottom stich over the top working yarn stitch. You are NOT completing a ewrap when doing this.

Jin Jin that is incorrect where you state this (The second stitch you described is the purl stitch)

the purl stitch is done like this

Step 1:
Place working yarn in front of peg and below the loop on the peg.

Step 2:
Insert knitting tool from the top down, hook the working yarn with the tool.

Step 3:
Pull the loop caught with the tool, up through the stitch. Hold it with your fingertips.

Step 4: Remove the original loop off the peg.

Step 5: Place the loop you are holding (from step 3) on the peg. Gently tug on the working yarn to tighten the stitch.

Also are you familiar with Isela phelps written tutorials http://isela.typepad.com/loomknitting/tutorials.html

youtube videos http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=isela+phelps

Check the pattern for stitch abbreviations
hope this helps

the best place to start is on youtube. www.youtube/loomknitting/knit stitch. If you check out anything by Isela Phelps aka purling sprite. You will get lots of good information. Also Kirsten at Goodknitkisses is very good and easy to understand. IMO it is too hard to explain the different stitches here. I find it best to Google whatever you need. ex. www.loomknitting/trueknit stitch. or www.loomknitting/purl stitch. there is the ewrap, knit, purl,U, and many others. You tube is an excellant teaching tool. Happy looming....

I think I understand what cabingirl2006 is saying. I have printed out all the responses and checked them while watching the Isela Phelps videos, and I think I understand. I'm just not sure that all the pattern-writers follow the same protocol when writing their patterns. The twisted knit stitch is far faster than the k=5 steps that you describe, so I was hoping they were comparable. But when I did a (ratty looking) hat with the different stitches they are nothing alike (as far as I can see). So I will follow the instructions where written and decide which one to do on those where it is not defined.

Thank you to all the responders, I find that even the best videos are not equal to a question/answer here on KP.

First in knitting there are only two stitches! The knit and purl with a lot of ways to execute each one. With the single rake knitting looms, ie: KK looms, there are 3 basic knit stitches and 1 purl stitch. Of course loom knitters have a lot of ways to execute these 4 basic stitches. That is for latter. Now for the basic 4. The wrapping of the working yarn on a peg is a separate act from the stitch. I will go from the loosest to tightest. The e-wrap is a frequently used cast on and if the next row of wraps are e-wrap and then knit over, the project will have about 4 rows to the inch of 2 strand worsted wt yarn. More tomorrow out of cafe time. Moon Loomer

Hi Redhead1951, Last night I was heading down the path of information already traveled. Try this blogspot: http://invisibleloomcraft.blogspot.com Renee Van Hoy writes patterns well, I have tried some of her patterns and have found the explanation of how the stitches are used to be helpful. Try some of her free patterns to give you a feel. In the beginning of May she published an e-book The Loom Knitter's Stitch Dictionary and The Stitch Sampler Pattern Collection, this may interest you. Now for a story of Ho ho. I saw a pattern with a picture of a tightly knit item made on the KK 24 peg round loom. Following instructions, e-wrap knit stitch, I produced a loosely knit item of 4 or 5 rows to the inch, that had few if any of the virtues that the pattern maker claimed and the picture showed. After a few e-mail exchanges I finally I asked for a detailed instruction on how the e-wrap knit stitch is done. The loom is e-wraped around 3 times and the bottom loop is knit over the top 2 loops. Yes! that did it. Now I could reproduce that snugly knit ( 7 - 8 rows to the inch) item as pictured. The stitch was not an e-wrap knit stitch but a but a one loop over two loop stitch, per Loom Knitting Primer by Isela Phelps Web site, purling sprite. The pattern maker insisted it was an e-wrap knit stitch and I did not know what I was doing. I guess so, I sure made a couple of ugly items, ho ho. Moon Loomer PS I like Tamarack, WV.
